To Dairy or not when Dieting?

According to some of the competetive bodybuilders I know it is best to limit your intake of dairy products when prepairing for a comp as it will make the muscles appear "smooth" and lessen the muscle definition.

I have done a few diets myself but never a full competition diet where body fat levels drops below 5-6%.

To all the guys and girls that have gone down the road of a real competition diet, what is your take on the matter?

Thanx!

I've heard conflicting reports about having dairy in/out of comp prep diets, but to be honest I've tried both and there didn't appear to be any noticeable difference to leaving dairy in compared to having it out. But in saying that when I did leave dairy in, it wasn't in any great amount, i.e. a couple of cups of coffee a day and some low fat cottage cheese every now and again.

Alot of top figure competitors i.e. Gina Aliotti, leave dairy out.

Now I can handle coffee black, so don't really worry about the milk too much anyways. But I remember reading an article saying something about the calcium (I think?) in milk can help with women trying to lose bodyfat.. I'll see if I can dig it out....

So far the verdict is to leave it out all together or to keep it to a minumum if you want to use dairy while dieting. For me I think I will go with the latter option, as to cut it out completely, would be very difficult for me e.g. black coffee don't appeal to me at all.

If I remember correctly calcium in dairy help to excrete dietary fat through the feces (spelling?). Saw a program a couple of months back on Discovery Channel about two Swedish scientist that did a study on the subject. They physically measured the amount of fat excreted on a diet rich in dairy compared to one low in dairy. Maybe it relates to the article you read.

Thanx for the inputs so far!

I guess its one of those "what ever works for your body" subjects.

Personally in my first comp last year I cut it out all together with about 8 weeks to go. It worked well but found I was just taking calcium tablets to make up for the lack of calcium. This time around I'm leaving it in in small amounts, coffee a day (just enough for it not to be black), morning protein shake and cottage cheese. If I feel its not working it will come out quick smart.

So it looks to me that if you really wants to get serious about your cutting diet, you will have to go low on the dairy.

To all that have replied so far, thank you for your inputs, its highly appreciated. Will have to start work on getting my dairy tooth removed :shifty:
