whats the best and cheapest premade protein drink to buy. Something that can be grabbed on the run? Any advice anyone? My other thought was to make up some rice milk and whey protein drinks and keep them in the fridge. Problem is keeping them cold when out and about. Any ideas?

Guess this wont answer your question but here goes.......

Taken from an Q&A by DR Paul Delia:

Look, I’ll put this bluntly. Pre-made drinks or RTDs are pure junk. They absolutely suck. You’re wasting money and missing valuable muscle-growth opportunities when you drink this garbage.

Let me explain. Do you know how they make these? If you did, you wouldn’t drink them even if the companies paid you to.

Imagine this, take a pot of water and set it on the stove. Bring this pot of water to a raging boil. Take a very low-grade protein powder and add it to the boiling water. Stir it in and let it boil for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes of boiling, add some preservatives. Allow the liquid to cool slightly. Next, poor the scalding hot liquid into a plastic bottle. You’ll have to do this several times to find the right temperature so that the hot liquid does not melt the plastic bottle. Next, seal the bottle and let cool. After it’s cool, set in the storage shed in your backyard for a few months. After a few months take the bottle of liquid from your storage shed and put it in the refrigerator. When it cools, enjoy.

Crazy huh? What do you think this does to quality of the protein? What do you think this does to the protein's ability to deliver a muscle building effect? I’ll tell you, it destroys it. As bad as the quality of the protein was to begin with, it is virtually useless now.

Can you imagine boiling your protein shake before you drink it? That’s the process these pre-made drinks go through when they are produced. I don’t care how great the ads claim these drinks are, bottom line is, the very process in which they are made destroys the proteins effectiveness. Heat destroys delicate whey proteins. Therefore, not only are you paying a premium for this so-called convenience, but you are paying this premium for a drastically damaged and virtually worthless protein.

Be smart. Don’t waste your time with these worthless drinks. Leave them to weekend want-to-bes and those that just pretend they train hard. That’s who these companies make them for any way.

Still up to you obviously but I guess there could be a fair amount of truth in above discussion.......

RTD's are pretty shit but not all of them are as bad as what is made out in that post.

Dr Paul Delia is partly right - yes heat is used when packing certain cheap rtd's, but the decent rtd's use Tetrapak. Tetrapak uses an aseptic cold process for packing instead of UHT. As it does not use high heat the protein quality is maintained. I'm pretty sure EAS and Cytosport use tetrapak. It's still questionable how good the quality of even the decent ones are. Most of them are full of sugar and the cheap ones are complete shite anyway without very good protein to start with, so any protein degradation isn't too bad because the protein was crap from the get go.

If you check out some of the more widely available ones (ie. ones that are at gyms, service stations etc) they tend to be mainly skim milk and sugar. If you need something quick and easy you would be better off drinking Sun Latte milk. It provides just a smidgen less protein per 100mls than the cheap rtd's and typically has about the same or less amounts of carbs in it. And you'lll proabably be able to get 2L for the same price as one 330ml rtd.

cheers for that, I acutally had thought of that, just stop in and buy milk. Unfortunatley, I have had dairy allergies for years. One drink of dairy and my muscles would all knot up. Couldnt work out etc. Then I found I could get away with whey. About two days ago I had my first drink of straight milk in about 6 years. No ill effects. Maybe Im cured. Will start looking at it as a quick way to get protein if I dont have whey ready to go. cheers for the advice guys, looks like im pretty sussed in this area. thanks again.
