Gyms in Auckland??

Mercury

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at joining a commercial gym in the Auckland area. My main purpose is for weight training & bodybuilding workouts. Not looking for gyms which specialize in circuit classes and pilates though.

What gym/s would you recommend and why?

If your central, cheapest Gym with half decent facilities I can reccomend is the Auckland University gym

Depends what your goals are.

If your looking to build/powerlift,

all you need is a gym with a good rack/bench/ weight selection.

Best,

V.V.

I have tried a few gyms around town, or at least looked in them.

Colloseum -

Pros

good for weight training, doesn't matter if you make some noise from lifting heavy chunks of metal. new equipment, good lay out, and the people there are relatively target driven, so the enery is there.

Cons

owners of the place have had fall outs with a few members, so the personallities may conflict.

Clive Greens

More of a health club, a few people seriously training and lifting, does have a few posers. No visible drug scene. does offer aerobics and pilates etc but that is away from the weight room.

limited free weights, only up to 40kg for db. but functional equipment

Tony Martins

a bit FAR FROM downtown, good equipment, good layout and some heavy trainers. offers aerobics, heaps of cycles, and squash. (open 24 hours)

Les Mills

I have never been in here. but the wife says, full of posers and pretty people. some obvious gear users. but it has good equipment and a central location. heaps of classes, and rather crowded.

hope this helps

BTS - (Frank) Boulgaris training systems - he's been around for a bit. I'd probably avoid anything linked to Golds though even if it is just the premises.

Health and Sport in Newton is pretty good - lots of equipment, not to poserish.

Clive green newmarket has some good equipment but last time I was there it was a little cramped.

Best thing to do is go into all of them and try them out - generally you can score a 2 week trial for free (or at least on the cheap).

damn good point that. try and score teh fee weeks. I reckon if you tried each gym in the city for the freebies you'll easily get a years worth of free training .

Why is golds a bad thing. have I missed something? do they have a bad reputation?

i did a month's trial at cuts n curves in onehunga - i would thoroughly recommend it if you're male and in to serious weight training. Being female, I was usually the only girl training and after a while, it became a little intimidating unfortunately, so I decided not to carry on. I'm now at the Environment Gym in Penrose - owned by Tony Ligaliga and Lynnie Wright. This one is really good if you're wanting to compete in bodybuilding as they are basically set up as a one-stop-shop. They do the nutrition thing, and hold posing clasess every weekend - as well as that, Tony & Lynnie have a lot of experience and are really helpful and supportive.

Gillies ave is pretty good - nice and cheap - with all the basics - lots of free weights, squat racks and benches. Last time I trained there they didn't have any machines other than lat pulldown, seated row, calf raise and leg press. It's not really a commercial gym and is mainly for powerlifters, and weightlifters. It's not targeted to bodybuilders but you could train there if you wanted to get away from all the bull that most gyms have (no mirrors either which means all you have to concentrate on is lifting the weights).
