gaining muscle and keeping lean

I've heard of 2 schools of thought on this one. personally i find it easier to put a bit of mass on while being a little chubby (10-15%bf). saying this the fitness does stay up there to make life a bit easier when it comes time to drop the chub

anyone doing this or had any experience doing it? or do most find it easier to bulk then cut?

by lean i mean less than 10%bf all year

i usualy do this type of training. i sit on around 6-8% bf all year. but it is very hard to put on more size wen this low on fat. for the first time now i am going to try bulking then getting cut. and try and stay cut with the bigger size. to stay lean i eat healthy and do about 20% cardio. ie i ride 40km a day to work, 5 days, and train at gym lifting wieghts 6 times a week. but its hard on u. wudnt recommend unless u have a lot of energy!

lol

How is this hard to believe. 85kg aint hard to hold onto.

I weighed 113kg when I was training for the boxing season over the last 3 months - and still held onto 95% of my original mass even with the 6hours+ of cardio a week. Cardio effects strength more than muscle mass IMO, short interval training and slow cycling is going to have an even lesser effect.

what about calorie manipulation? i.e bulk of your carbs at breakfast and pwo?

this combined with early morning or post workout cardio?

do you guys still think it is possible to have an increase in muscle mass? i know there are many factors contributing, and i know its not an optimal anabolic environment, although I was thinking of giving it a go.

can any1 give me any other advice on some aspects i may have missed?

Yeah there's some that've had success with cycling calories or carbs, usually with a low/med/high cycle.

Taxing training days, like legs or a lagging bodypart maybe - would have a "high" day for carbs or calories, whereas a lesser taxing days would have low or medium. What high/low/medium is exactly (in grams or cals), would be relative to your bodyweight.

I've been at around 10% (my estimate) for a good while now. I think I've continued to gain muscle, but it's certainly been slow. Having said that, my diet over that time has had way too many meals missing for me to expect anything else. With the current NZBB Challenge, I'm going to try and up meal count (specifically the protein) and see how I can balance this whole lean-versus-growth thing.

Yep fully agree. The reduced calories while staying lean will effect strength gains to some degree, but should help reduce the distended gut you can get from bulking heavily. I look bigger at 10% than a few kilos heavier and fuller at 12%BF, vascluarity and definition beat mass and water retention hands down IMO.

Staying lean and eating clean is very expensive tho.

100% natural. only supplements i take or have ever taken is protein shakes. i have about 4 shakes a week. and then the rest is eating real food.
