So what makes a good mass-gaining diet?

I've been trying to find a simple and to-the-point page to read up on diet but there aren't too many "you should eat this in these quantities" examples I've come across. I also haven't worked out how many 'bad' foods you can add in to your diet to make it tolerable before it becomes a problem.

Specifically, is it safe to add fat and bread into your diet? I find these two things hardest to avoid since they're always there due to other people in the house eating them.

At the moment I eat a bagel, can of tuna and salad with mayo for breakfast, steak/chicken with salad for lunch (my hours are shifted so this is dinner for everyone else in the house) and then I repeat breakfast again. I do my workout between lunch and dinner.

I let myself have pizza or something once every two weeks. Other than that if I get hungry, it's a can of tuna with a little mayo to convince myself it's not all fish. This whole fiending for mayo thing makes me wonder what they put in it. Whatever it is, it's delicious.

I also find the tuna comes drenched in oil. Do you want to strain this out, or do you make it part of your daily intake?

Can you eat TOO MUCH protein?

I drink an unholy amount of diet carbonated drinks. There's no calories or sugar in them, so this is pretty much the same as drinking water, right?

Answers to these mysteries are welcome!

Edit: I actually found something useful. Good one, internet!

Yeah, you haven't found any "you should eat this in these quantities" type diets 'cos there's no gospel when it comes to dieting. There's a couple of formulas you can use to start out, but because we're all different in how we adapt to certain foods and have different activity levels etc.. you need to keep adjusting your intake.

Of course its safe to add fat and bread to your diet. What kinda fats are you talking about? Most people eliminate bread because you can't get full with 2-4 measley slices.. and its pretty calorie/carb expensive when you compare it to something more filling like kumara or potato. Plus, its all too easy to overreat with bread.

I drain my tuna shrug.gif.

And yes, you CAN have too much protein.. just like how you can have too many fats or too many carbs. The extremely simplifed version of it is.. The protein is broken down into amino acids, (or the "building blocks" as heaps of ppl call them lol) and then any excess is converted to glycogen (like carbs). Once you've exceeded the amount of required protein and glycogen your body needs, the rest (whether its protein, carbs or fat) will be stored as fat.

Diet drinks are NOT the same as water lol2.gif. I've never heard of anyone dying from drinking them, so go for gold if its gonna stop you pigging out on other foodz. If you have stomach issues or you plateau in your mass gaining phase or you get addicted to them and need help lol, they'll be the first to go.

Make your own mayo, its easy. And all it needs to contain is egg yolks, olive or someother oil like grapseed, vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper and yes count it as part of your daily intake.

It is completly trial and error as far as how much of what you should eat.

just because diet fizzy doesnt have sugars in them doesnt make them the same as drinking water. have a look at the ingredients list on them. most of them, if not all, say sweetner (951). which is aspartame. an artificial sweetner that turns into formaldehyde (spelling?) and methanol in your guts. not cool!

also on the fizzy drink the phenylanine causes the squirts if you have too much of it. restrict to one serving a day, the rest should be water. at the moment i am on about 3500cal a day broken down to 6 meals. each one of these meals contains 40%protein, 50%carb, 10%fat.

fats consist of liquid fats, such as omegas, (flax, and fish oils). apart from that drink lots of water to stayed hydrated, sugars aren't all bad especially when you are about to go for a workout. good to see you are having the odd cheat meal too. I'm really looking forward to mine later tonight. might even have a half glass of wine. \:D/

I'm not trying to take the piss. I'm asking how a carbonated drink with no sugar or calories in it is bad. I thought there might be this response, so that's why I'm asking. Can you explain why it's bad? Is CO2 somehow not conducive to muscle building or weight loss?

As for the rest of you, thank you for the responses. It's all too easy to assume everyone knows where to find out these things.

The syrup I use to make soda doesn't have phenylalanine in it, fortunately.

I really didn't like my cheat meal tonight. I felt pretty ugh after it. Pizza just isn't worth the effort, should have gone for curry.

I think I'm getting the right kind of fats anyway as long as I get rid of mayo as someone else mentioned. Thanks for that. I take it you get flax oil from a health food store?

I don't particularly believe the antihype around sweetners, I'm sorry to say. Plus being diabetic they're better than eating sugar. My sweetner of choice has been sucrose in any case, which has shown no evidence of carcinogenesis.

The only real criticism i've heard of it is that it tricks you into thinking you're going to receive an energy boost and then you don't, causing you to become hungry. Which in our case seems to be a good thing.

You meant sucralose, not sucrose - as sucrose is table sugar. Sorry :)

Sucralose is called sweetner 955, which is what the syrup I use contains.

So you're saying there was some kind of useful nutritional information in his advice to 'give up bodybuilding'?

I've read a few of your posts now and I have a solid understanding of your attitude towards others. Incidentally, I loved that one where you criticised someone for misspelling "strength" and then went on to make half a dozen basic spelling mistakes in the same post. At least you're being consistent.

is it safe to add fat and bread into your diet? I find these two things hardest to avoid since they're always there due to other people in the house eating them.

You should eat small to moderate{depending on your goals} servings of carb with your meals through the day.

After your workout you should consume some High gi carbs 50-80 grams{with a good shot of protein powder} to replenish muscle glycogen stores, the the sudden high blood sugar level will cause and insulin spike which will shuttle the nutrients into the muscle and also insulin is a great anti -catabolic substance.Eat no fats post workout, insulin is also great at storing fat and fat slows down the absorption rate of food which will interfere with your hopeful insulin spike.

Heres the low down on fats

http://www.westonaprice.org/knowyourfat ... l#benefits

Can you eat TOO MUCH protein?

Protein has a caloric value,4cals per gram{the same as carbs},so if you are eating the correct amount of carbs for you LBM and expenditure, but are eating over your requirements in protein there's a good chance that the extra may be stored as fat.

I drink an unholy amount of diet carbonated drinks. There's no calories or sugar in them, so this is pretty much the same as drinking water, right?

I drink a few I feel I get a pickup from the phenylalanine

The body converts phenylalanine into tyrosine, another amino acid essential for making proteins, certain brain chemicals, and thyroid hormones. Symptoms of phenylalanine deficiency include confusion, lack of energy, decreased alertness, decreased memory, and diminished appetite.
