Making My own spotting cage?

Recommended Posts

Ok seeing as all my equipment is at home and i dont have a spotter, Dad said he would build me a Power Cage(spotting cage), what i was wanting to know is are they able to be used for benching I already know they are used for squats. Also are they the same or similar enough to having a person manuel spotting you ive never used one before.post-1425-14166818010479_thumb.jpg

Firstly, your dad is teh awesomeness.

Secondly.. of course you can use them for benching. If your dad can make holes in the rack bars (?) for the long safety bars.. you don't need a spotter, but your ROM would be limited like frogie says. Orrrr you could just use the little safety thingees in the pic (not sure about the name?):

if you want.. and someone could easily stand in there to spot you, and just use the wee safety thingees to rack up the bar.

Probably have to disagree with my learned colleagues, it will not restrict your ROM. Most Power Racks which is the photo above, have hole settings of 3-4 inches 75 to 100mm. If the weights are light and rep ranges high this in no issue. Once the weight gets up the spacing are to big, they need to be about 50mm.

In the area for benching the holes should be 25mm apart and of a smaller diameter this gives you plenty of range for benches, pin press etc. Then you set the pins at chest height for failure and saftey. The things P&W was refering to are J hooks. You use these to start you lifts and the pins are for saftey or a certain depth you want to hit, like board presses.

65mm x 3 mm wall box section will do or 50mm x 3mm wall depending on price.
