What does a good pers. trainer make?

Out of curiosity: What type of money do personal trainers make in NZ, especially the good ones?

In SA it's only the guys that have build a good reputation/ achieved a lot of success in the bodybuilding field that really make it as personal trainers. The profession is not regulated here, so anybody can become a trainer here, therefore a few make good money of it.

I'm quite interested to hear how things work in your part of the world. I would guess it's much more regulated there?

Thanks

morning, things in NZ are slowly becoming regulated with certified fitness trainers, However at the end fo the day this is only a piece of paper that reduces the liability of the trainer and the gym (insurances etc). the reputation and history of the trainer is still paramount in NZ too

Thanx there for the reply. Good to hear that the guys that have done their time in the trenches still get the recognition that they deserve. Some 19 year old guys here do a 6month course in personal training, start working in the gym and then act like they know it all ,just because they have a piece of paper. That really tick me off.

I agree, knowledge in this game is paramount, otherwise you're not going to get anywhere, but if you haven't spent the time under the bar that knowledge don't count for much either.

Back to the question: Anybody know what the good guys charge over there?

Thanx

We do also have allot of trainers who do the 6 month course and think they know it all, they get their clients doing the most ridiculous excerises, it's such a joke. Les Mills in takapuna is filled with them, but the crazy thing is people acually pay these trainers to get them to run around the car park or do jumping jacks in the gym......

alot of the people who get personal trainers are probably in the older age bracket so id say they need to warm up.

wats with the grudge against personal trainers? they not all useless, probalem is to average joe a personal trainer is a personal trainer they dont know who u are and what uv achieved (or wat u think uve achieved  ), as long as u can give them abit of results and piss in their ear bout how great they are doing then they are probably gonna keep comig back to u

at the end of the day guys/girls if u think u can do a better job.. then why dont u do it?

and the answer on average id say would be $40-$60 per session

IMO most of them learn the same set of rules when they have no previous training experience and do a course to become qualified. Most down here go to NZIS in Wellington so they're all learning the same thing. I suppose it's up to them afterwards to decide which to use.

A little OT but a prime example. Theres one trainer at my gym who always thinks hes right, hes 19, nearly skin and bones and thinks because he did a course in Australia knows more than everyone. He steered me wrong with my deadlifts a few months ago, when I was doing them properly he said the way to do them was stiff legged and that's how deadlifts are...being the trainer I listened and within a month injured my back, then when I recently got back into them (properly) he said I was still wrong and when I said I had been to powerhouse gym to watch the CD comp, his reply was "oh yeah lots of qualified people there"...

Aside from that, most course trainers and self experienced trainers IMO have a very different way of training. No disrespect to course trainers but myself I would never select one if I was going to ever have a trainer, I think most knowledge comes from experience.

Whats wrong with getting them to run around the car park? Its more fun than standing on a treadmill for ages. A lot of clients are not looking for big muscles or a chiseled look. They want to lose weight or be fit for their everyday activities. A lot of people find lifting weights and cardio machines boring. A trainers job is to make the clients train in a way that they find exciting or at least less boring.

I would say a bodybuilding based PT would earn a lot more than the $50 bracket in answer to your question.

Just because you don't understand the training doesn't make it shit.

As long as they are seeing results, and are happy with the cash investment then who cares.

I pay $60 an hour for mine, and $35 for a half hour. Hes the best in the business this side of the country tho.

Was spending $150 a week on one when I was preparing for boxing season. Well worth the money.

I agree NZIS is kaka. Had an interesting talk about protien absorbtion yesterday with one of the new guys who was convinced that there was a predetermined amount that could be utilised - regardless of body weight, matobolisim, and excersize requirements.

i charge $70 per session for a programme testing and a nutritional plan unless they buy in bulk then the price comes down.

I have more qualifications then required but do it for the love. I like the lifestyle, i could go lecture at a university but not my scene just yet. For those who said anyone can walk on a treadmill or ride a bike, there are other things such as HITT and intervals where people wouldn't push them self so thats where a trainer comes in.

also not everyone is like us and enjoys training. some absolutely hate it so a trainer ensures they get in the gym and actually working hard, therefore getting results.

well said. i will add there are others that have the dedication and drive to become bodybuilders but dont no were to start, this was me when i started, so for first six months i payed to see a trainer every couple of weeks not for motivation but to insure proper technique and for bf test.

with out my first trainer i would still be doing one those crap generic progams they give you wen you join the gym

If you dont mind me asking NZPT, what sort of qual's do you have?

I went to NZIS and although the teachers were not the most qualified and knowledgeable the varying experiences of the others studying was worth it, we all got on quite well and learnt a lot from each other.

And samwelly we're not all stupid 8)
