Where are the BIG guys?

Recommended Posts

I have been a little inconsistent over the last few years or so, even longer if I am totally truthful (last competed 10 years ago!). The problem....not enough real life inspiration.

While I really like training at my gym there are no monsters there, where do they all train? Some must exist in the Auckland region. I need to occasionally do a casual workout in the gyms where the freaks train so I can get inspired.

Where are the freaks?!?!?!?

I must admit to enjoy perving on the people around me in the gym between sets :P Not really perving just looking at how much people are lifting or how big they are... I'm discreet at least Id like to think so lol Its a respect thing too for the effort it takes!

'ts interesting...some of the big freaks can't lift, some of the built folks don't look that big..and yep, sometimes it's good to have a few really big guys around, purely for comparison or inspiration purposes... :)

Like watching a former NABBA winner leg-pressing til his knees hit his ears, with 400kg up!

I would say they are training for size more than strength, where volume is higher than a strength training regime - and weight used is subsequently less.

I agree though, we do need more big guys at the more mainstream gyms. But unfortunatly what we see as inspiration, some of the other gym users (think cardio freaks, or the smaller guys) feel intimidated and weak in comparison. I find most serious lifters train at night or very early morning when the gym is quiter.

So there are no freaks training in Auckland? How the hell am I going to get inspired to get to 125kg?

I guess I'll just randomly hit some of the "bodybuilding" gyms around town later in the evening, thats when I prefer to train anyway :D

If you're ever in Manukau around 4 or 5pm, drop into Genetics gym....you wont be disappointed!! Bodybuilding/Powerlifting....hard trainers and a no frills gym.

Never found Genetics crowded. Old gear - maybe, but crusty??? Don't think so. Plenty of good heavy weights and really supportive crew. You must like your gym "pretty" versus functional?!

ha! lets just say its a little less crusty than yours, but not by much.I don't think buck has spent a buck on the place has he? theres a bit of stuff in need of repair. The free weight area matting has had to many years of dropped weights on it.i just about tripped on a few times with heavy d/b's in hand due to the rubber tiles being completely stuffed.d/b's falling apart ect...

after about 4 30 pm the place seemed to pack out and was a nightmare from my experience about a year ago

pretty hardcore training gym which is what i did like about it though.

It's why I love my mornings, much quieter - although you can tell competition season is upon us. Big lads starting to trickle back in!

I will concede the matting has seen better days, it just keeps you in focus when doing walkin lunges!

I want to come see this hardcore gym with big dudes.

yeah same i might have top go along c wat its all about

Fair enough. Let me know when you're thinking of going. That way if the place is pretty empty you still got someone to train with. Monday night might work, gyms are usually full then. Maybe a Thursday.
