When I am competing I get major cravings for licorice close to comp time. I dont tend to get any other cravings, and actually never eat licorice (I dont even really like it but backstage a couple of licorice allsorts taste bloody great!

One of my clients got cravings for it also.... can any one shed any light on this.

Does licorice have something in it that the body craves??

Real licorice contains quite a few things some of which can be toxic in high doses. The most probable reason for the cravings is that it provides potassium and calcium. It's possible that your electrolyte balance is out of whack from low carb dieting and/or diuretics and so the licorice should help balance it out. The human body is pretty good at figuring out what it needs and animals do it as well. Horses will often eat their wooden stables if they're deficient in certain vitamins and minerals.

Hey Thanks Flex. I dont use diuretics, and take a calcium supplement. I also get my bloods done to check my levels and stay within the 'norms' throughout the season. I'm also not much of a traditional 'low carb' dieter, and am for certain I'm not a horse!!
