Best Tan to Use

I prefer to use Jan Tana now. When I first started competing I jused used Dream Tan, which gaves a great colour, but is so messy it's crazy, makes it difficult to pump up etc. without it getting all over your bikini or just smudging. Then I was suggested to use Pro Tan underneath Dream Tan, and to be honest, there was no real difference in the colour on stage except for afterwards when I was covered with an awful tan while it wore off. The Jan Tana is so easy to apply, 3-4 coats, is a great colour and fades gradually (instead of blotchy) so you're left with a nice tan after the show.

Hey Truds, do you use the 'glaze' that they recommend on the jan tana website after you've applied the competition colour? Or can you just get away with using the colour? Have considered Jan Tana myself as I've heard that it's 'dry' and not as messy as the pro tan/dream tan. My last figure bikini was a burgundy colour and I went to do my side-tricep pose in the pre-judging(using the pro-tan with dream tan on top), touched the back of my bikini and it looked like a big poo stain lol. My clothes that I wore on the day still have gold sparkles in them!!

Hi ya!

I tried the glaze the first time I used Jan Tana, and you really only need a little bit of it. For the second time I used it I didn't try the glaze, and to be honest I don't think it made that much difference. But I think it can depend on the type of stage lighting you have too and I think if you're in a bodybuilding/physique class it might be more helpful (I'm in figure). The glaze is supposed to harden under the stage lights to give more definition, but unless you've got 'big ass' stage lighting I don't think it'll matter too much.

My sponsor brought me a white top to wear on the day of one of my shows (bloody male... he he) some of the tan rubbed off onto it over the day - like a dry residue - and it all completely washed out of the top. No stains on the bikini at all, which is fab if you want to sell it on.

Thanks Truds :)

I forgot to mention that I have tanned people using the Kabakoff body shimmer. It's nice and easy to apply, it washes off well. My only warning to people about using this is to make sure that you have enough time to let it settle in as it can appear very streaky if you put it on right before you go on stage. It gives quite a different colour on stage (reddish tones). People I know that have used it, often go back to dream tan.

  • 3 weeks later...

I tried a spray tan as a base...lasted all of about a day and then it was gone. Such a waste of money and just ended up doing more coats of Protan instead. If anything I could say of it, that whilst it was on it gave me an idea of how good I would look once properly tanned up - it freaked me out a little, in a good way! :P

I use 2-3 coats of pro-tan. I dont spray it on though, I get a sponge applicator from the paint shop/ware house stationery...like a brush but has a sponge on it. The tan goes on nice n evenly like that.

Day of show, up nice n early for a coat of dream tan and then another coat before show time....with a cover of hair spray to set it.

Like Truds, I have used Jan Tana. This was really lovely to use but I dont know where to get it now. Belinda from BodySculpt was bringing it in for a a while.
