Best Multi??

:stupid:

I doubt the brand matters, as long as it contains what you need get it. I think supermarket ones are good value for money compared with some you find at a nutrition shop.

I wouldnt get a generic one however, get one specifically for men.

I did a little comparison recently between a generic mens' multi (so it has all the extra goodies like a bit of tribulus, more zinc, etc) and ZMA.

Guess what? The ZMA contained no more zinc than the standard men's multi did (although it was a different salt, which maybe makes a difference?). Obviously the multi was significantly cheaper, too.

It wasn't all good, though - the multi also contained calcium, which apparently inhibits the uptake of zinc. And most brands of men's multis seem to have the same problem. This seems pretty pointless! Does anyone know why they'd be doing this?

My first thought would be that they dont think the general public would know that some compounds compete for absorpsion, or otherwise inhibit one another. My guess is they just pack as many in as possible to make it seem like its a really good purchase.

I did a bit of research an found this article

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/quer ... t=Abstract

"However, during a normal calcium intake of 800 mg/day, the high zinc intake had no significant effect on the intestinal absorption of calcium. These studies have shown that the high zinc intake decreased the intestinal absorption of calcium during a low calcium intake but not during a normal calcium intake"

So i guess this means if you get a good balance of zinc to calcium then it should be okay, if however you have a high zinc intake and a low calcium intake then it will effect absorption.

Actually type of Multi does matter, ones like 'Cenovis' form the supermarket are an absolute waste of money. Apparently you only absorb something like 3% of what's stated on their bottle. I would recommend the Ultimate Sports Multi by NFS. It has a larger ZMA component, and provides good guidelines for usage.

Beware ZMA fans too, excessive use leads to depletion of minerals like copper and selenium...the body only stores small amounts of minerals like these, but problems can arise due to depletion.

i use usana body rox, i dunno how good it is, my teacher who competes in masters triathlons reccomended it, and it looks pretty good.

USANA were independently tested to be one of the best multi vitamins available a few years ago. The tests were commissioned by the Canadian Government as far as I recall.

Some of the results are scary - there are some multis out there that aren't really worth monopoly money.

hey man, where did you find the test that was done?

The results of those tests are published in book called "The Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements" by Lyle McWilliams. I've noticed a fair amount of negative feedback by USANA's competitors about the book, which I suppose is par for the course in such a competitive industry.

Personally I think USANA makes amazing supplements - I feel great on them but what's really impressive are the incredible results I've seen on animals treated with USANA products, no placebo effect going on there :)
