Rowing machines

I would say rowing is GREAT for cardiovascular and muscle strength / toning - if you know how to row with the proper technique ie olympic styles. I see so many people doing it all wrong and nobody showing them the right way that they might as well not bother. I would say unless you know what you are doing or can get someone to show you correctly ie catch, drive etc; stick with the tredmill as it is less reliant on skill for a successful workout.

Well without going into too much detail here...you need to use your leg drive and then followthru with your upper body, correct sequence right through to the final wrist movment and then reaching forward into the start of the next stroke.

You need to see it demonstrated in person or watch a video on you tube or something. Alot of people 'row over their knees', that is drop the handle down to their ankles and / or lose all the slack off the chain; hence you are not working hard at all.

Apart from seeing the person doing it, you can usually hear the difference in the noise that the flywheel makes between the rower and non-rower....a long powerful whoosh noise vs any others the machine might be made to produce by those doing it wrong.
