Let me Introduce Myself

Hi,

it's time (since I've posted a few times) to introduce myself....

I'm in Wellie-world, 46, an office worker, been "going to the gym" for about three and a half years. Started off trying to stave off the fat rolls and their consequences, shed a lot of weight (about 25% total weight)...after 18 months I did the Lake Taupo cycle, a bunch of other rides 80/100/120km, and now run 10k's socially.

All good stuff...but, this year it's 'train like a bodybuilder' to drive down the % bf, tone what I can find, and build what I can't.

179cm, 104kg, 12.6% at the mo.

Just started a fatburning cycle, expect a training log shortly. Essentially it's cardio before brekkie and last thing at night, weights after work; diet's six small meals, hi-protein, lo-carbs, six days a week, with carbs on the seventh day :D

Haven't taken any pics of note...upper body's still covered in lard  but legs aren't too bad - maybe once I've got a bit of a tan, otherwise the glare of the camera flash would be blinding!

Doncha hate the way you lose fat from the edges inwards...

Another system I use is those Tanita scales that guess % bf electrically..they have two scales, one for 'muscular' and one for everyone else...on the 'muscular' it's 11%, on the "other" it's more like 17%. I suspect the truth is somewhere in between -

but hey, I can at least find my ribs - now I need to build a serratus to cover 'em!

Y'all may be right about the % bf - but whether that number is a load of baloney or not, I'm not trying to over-sell myself to anyone, it's just what I was told. You shoulda seen me before! I went from a 120cm waist to 97...

The more important thing is that the %bf is trending down...it's just a number, a gauge, a tool to measure progress, right?

More history: like I said, most of my "going to the gym" was about cardio and general fitness, I've really only paid attention to body shape/ building in the last four months - so there's plenty of time for improvement, that's why I'm here.

Oh I have few false impressions of the amount of work left to do...

Took me a long time to take the focus off numbers...in the early days the BMI used to freak me out. Now, who gives a toss as long as I lift more...

Today's leg day, oh joy...squats, press, extension (pyramids; curls and deadlifts (dropsets); and standing/seated raises - hope they got more fans going than last night

Got home, found measurements...

Height 179.5 cm

Wt: 104.7 kg

Biceps 39cm tensed

chest 113-117cm

Waist 97cm

Hips 106cm

R Calf 46cm

R Thigh 67cm

As far as %bf goes, two years ago I was tested by Fitlab here in Wellington..I weighed 102.7kg then, and %bf was 12.8% by electrical impedence, 14.8% by 7-skinfold measurement.... but enough of the details....hell, I reckon the biggest achievement was only putting on 300g over Christmas :D

Nope, sorry for the delay in stepping out of the shadows, Pseud and P&W, but I'm here now...and I have to say I've already learned a shedload of good advice. I like the way the forums are moderated...much better than some others outside bodybuilding that I've seen :)

..and reading the other journals made me think about goals :)

Short-term: by the end of the 10-week programme I just started, which is all about fat-burning, I want to be closer to a legitimate sub-10% bf. I don't care so much about bw - it's quite likely that I'll drop under 100kg - provided I don't damage the LMM so much.

By the end of the year I'd like to see real strength and shape improvements, including upper-lower body balance, especially chest (my bench sux when compared to squat or leg press), shoulders and arms. I've never really done 1RM, or even low-reps, to determine what I can do - that's maybe something for the winter, once I've finished fat-burning.
