Improving my deadlift form

Laver

Recommended Posts

Ive only started doing deadlifts in the last 2weeks, so done two sessions of dead lifts. First lot was with 40kg, normal overhand grip, second I tried 60kg but noticed it was straining my back so needed to drop the weight and improve form first.

I am conscious of the basics like looking up the whole time and keeping my back straight if not slightly arched, stance is feet straight ahead and sholder width apart which feels fine.

Hands are holding bar outside of legs obviously, when I bend down reading to lift my knees are a far way over the bar, I then find as I raise the bar it is literally rubbing up the length of my shins then over my knee cap, which means its as close to me as possible to reduce strain on my lower back. But it does seem very akward, like the bar shouidnt be rubbing again my shin/knee as I raise?

If I didn't think I was simply doing something wrong; then I would think my arms are disproportionally short and legs to long, but I know this isnt the case, it just seems like it!

So, advice would be great :)

I used to deadlift with the bar grazing my shins, there wasn't any escaping it lol. I have long legs (long shins) so my knees protruded over the top of the bar so far that I would actually have to push the bar forward when bringing it up. No good..

To fix it I do sumo deadlifts instead - shoulder width or wider stance, hands inside knees. Works the glutes, hams and adductors a bit more (a little bit less lower back). I personally wouldn't go back to regular deads...

I thought about it, im pretty sure I was too concerned about my torso being upright near and just after the initialy pickup moment, rather than just being straight and slightly arched, meaning i was getting my strength from all the wrong places, after watching some vids online i noticed peoples back were almost horizontal (not quite, maybe 20degrees?) while i was more like 70 degrees in relation to the ground!

This also resulted in needing the bar really close into my ankles before I did the lift which didnt help either.

I'd be carefull with taking it on face value with what you see at the gym and vids etc, just because they lift alot might not mean it is good technique. I had a chat with Precious McKenzie, and he taught me how to dead lift, which is very different to what i have seen some of the big boys lift. I think i would rather listen to the world class lifting athlete :)

I'd agree with you, but even if its not the best form im willing to risk its not that bad, considering they're prob relativly good @ wot they do and have lots of practise :), so long as Im injury free and not straining anything im uite happy to proceed as is, however, you should share some of the world class knowldge!!
