VPX 'No Shotgun' and BSN 'cellmass' have been recalled in Austarlia by the TGA for containing the prescribed drug COURAMIN.

Apparently its a blood thinner that isn't too good for the liver amongst some other side effects.

BSN are gunna be in the shit surely, firstly the have a law suit against them that none of their products contain the claimed CEE and now this.

It's strange how this can be urgent yet it's taken almost 2 months to filter through and still seems to be available at a lot of the Australian websites.

The ingredient causing the issues is Coumarin which is found in Cinnamon and most likely Cinnulin PF which is cinnamon extract found in CellMass.

However according to this: http://www.nutraingredients.com/news/ng ... ms-germany Cinnulin PF shouldn't contain coumarin.

"Not all cinnamon capsules contain such harmful products, however. Indeed, researchers at the USDA have performed significant research into a water-extract of cinnamon, marketed as Cinnulin PF, by Integrity Nutraceuticals International.

According to Integrity, Cinnulin PF contains standardized quantities of the active components of cinnamon, two trimers and one tetramer classified as double-linked type-A polymers, but not the potentially harmful compounds.

Cinnulin PF is claimed to be the only cinnamon extract standardized for these compounds. "

cinimmon ? the same stuff on my cinimmon and sugar coated pinapple ring ? how the heck can that be a prescription drug?

Yeah that stuff. It's kinda like BZP and black pepper. Coumarin is a natural flavouring and perfume that is found in many plants. It occurs in higher concentrations in the types of cinnamon grouped together under the name “cassia cinnamon”.

Consuming an aqueous extract of cinnamon i.e. Cinnulin PF, poses no such risk because coumarin is lipid-soluble, not water-soluble, and remains behind when the water-soluble components are extracted from the bark. "Cinnulin PF, developed through a USDA Creative Research and Development Agreement, is a proprietary water soluble cinnamon extract that filters out toxins found in whole cinnamon. Cinnulin PF is the only extract standardized for Type-A Polymers identified by the USDA as being the active components. It is appropriate in products to help metabolic syndrome factors by supporting healthy glucose levels, body composition and blood pressure, as well as antioxidant formulations."

It's hard to know how much coumarin the TGA found - it says traces so might be a very miniscule amount. If BSN are using Cinnulin PF which contains coumarin then it is more the fault of a company called Integrity Nutraceuticals who are the makers of it. Cinnulin PF is used in a large variety of supplements, including some fat burners as it can help maintain healthy glucose levels.

This website here covers pretty much everything about it: http://www.bfr.bund.de/cd/8487

BfR has assessed the potential health risk from coumarin in foods. It believes there is a risk of liver damage in particularly sensitive individuals. BfR has, therefore, established a tolerable daily intake (TDI). This amount can be consumed over a lifetime without posing a risk to health. The TDI is 0.1 milligram coumarin per kilogram body weight and day. This also applies to particularly sensitive individuals. The European Food Safety Authority decided on the same value in its coumarin assessment. If this level is exceeded for a short time only, there is no threat to health.

From the use of coumarin in the medicinal field, it is common knowledge that relatively low doses can already cause liver damage in a small group of particularly sensitive individuals if the medicinal products are administered over a few weeks. In minor cases this leads to an elevation of liver enzymes in blood, in severe cases to inflammation of the liver which manifests as jaundice. The exact mechanism of action is not known but the effects are reversible.

  • 2 months later...

Not just that ingredient but there it was also recalled apparently for the CEM>

BSN put out a statement: Apparently it all stems from a bit of jealousy from a rival Supplements Company.

DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ – RELY ON WHAT IS PROVEN

The Law Firm of Call, Jensen & Ferrell (“The Firm”), which is linked to BSN’s competitor(s) (which will all be disclosed at the appropriate legal time), filed a lawsuit against BSN on behalf of Michael Rivera and Dan Abell individually and on behalf of all other similarly situated (the “Lawsuit”). The Lawsuit alleges that: 1) CEM3 does not exist in CELLMASS®, N.O.-XPLODE™ or NITRIX®; 2) BSN’s patent pending for CEM3 does not exist; 3) CEM3 does not exist; and 4) BSN is the alter ego of Chris Ferguson.

BSN contends that all of the claims made against it and Chris Ferguson are meritless and intends to vigorously defend itself against these allegations. The Lawsuit is based upon a single test which did not directly test for the presence of the CEM3 ingredient, by a laboratory that never contacted BSN for information about CEM3. Contrary to the speculation of Call Jensen’s lawyers, a patent application for CEM3 does indeed exist and is currently pending before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. BSN is not the alter ego of Mr. Ferguson or any of its officers, but is a Delaware corporation in good standing and which observes all required corporate formalities.

BSN not in a good way at the moment then with No-Xplode been taken off the market to.

Only off the shelves in NZ. I'm sure the several thousand tubs of NoXplode they sell each day in the USA keeps their accountant happy enough.
