Fasted Weights

Whats your opinions on doing weights fasted?

E.G getting up in the morning (about 10am) and doing weights fasted (or cup of black coffee only) and having first meal (1/2cup oats+scoop PP) after weights (approx 11-1130am)?

Ive been doin this a bit lately, sometimes even doing a 20min run after weights, but is it detrimental to muscle growth (no carbs to fuel the workout, so will i just be using muscle as energy)?

I get the whole idea of fasted long, slow intensity cardio for fatburning, but wondered how this would apply to doing weights instead.

Any comments/advice greatly appreciated.

:)

Hmmm, speaking from personal experience at comp time I could get up first thing and feel good as gold after doing some cardio before I had breakfast (getting on the bike was hardest to start with). BUT if I wanted to lift that day I had to make sure I had whatever (little) carbohydrate immediately before a session otherwise I would be even weaker and spaced out during.....thats a bit of the extreme.

However, outside of comp, I always try to eat or have eaten a few good meals throughout the day before I get to my weights session. Muscles need adequate glucose / glycogen stores to fire the whole ATP cycle etc etc. You might get away with no carbs before weights (on a regular basis)if you were doing lower intensity and higher reps but personally I hate going to the gym feeling crap before Ive even started!

If you are on a reduced carb diet the best way to utilise those carbs would be half before your weights and half after, doing resistance training in a catabolic state is not a wise idea, though you could also get away with protein and fat rather than protein and carbs pre workout also.

Yeah, doing low intensity cardio fasted works because you are using energy at a rate at which the body can utilise stored bodyfat as energy,

When you start training intensly for a prolonged period and fasted there is no stored glycogon in the muscles for ATP conversion ( the energy system we use during intence training ) and fat can not be used at this fast rate, so the only thing left is muscle tissue, thus enducing a cataboilc of muscle wasting state.

Sorry that sounded clearer in my head, must be tired lol.

If you cannot face eating anything ( even a banana or some nuts or fruit juice) then a handfull of good BCAA's will do wonders at fighting off catabolism.

nah irongame that made sense! thankslot guys, guess il jus go back to wat i did b4; cardio fasted am, and weights pm, or if i do do weights am, with a pshake onboard

The times I've done cardio in the morning before eating I've always felt dizzy & sick during & afterwards. Is this a feeling that goes after a while of doing it?

if i took thermos i'd get hot, and my stomach would rumble alot, but not sick, maybe depends wat intensity u do it at-i only walk..slowly. :D
