Schapelle Corby

We'll probably never know whether that chick is guilty. Whether she is or not, I have to wonder why her case is seen as such a big deal. There are scores of Aussies and Kiwis languishing in third world prisons, many on patently trumped up charges, without anyone lifting a finger to help them.

I expect the handwringing over Corby's case is on account of her being a pretty, middle class white woman and reflects the tendency of this stupid society to believe that such people can do no wrong and must be coddled and pampered and pandered to at every turn. Were I arrested in the same circumstances as her, I expect that I would have been lifed off months ago with perhaps a brief mention in the local paper and without the general public giving a toss. Hence I don't see why I should agitate for her release, as it is highly statistically improbable that she would do the same for me.

Now that the verdict and response to it is in, I'd just like to express my contempt for most of Corby's supporters, whose position is pure sexism and racism. When Aussie and Kiwi men are jailed, either overseas or at home, on less evidence than that against Corby, do these people complain?-no. If an Indonesian girl were to be arrested at Sydney or Auckland airport with 4.1kg of drugs in her luggage, would her subsequent lengthy prison sentence ruffle any feathers?-of course not.

Corby's supporters' position could be summed up as "Who the hell are these little brown dinks to tell a blue-eyed white girl what to do; particularly a pretty one with big tits who cries a lot". What a bunch of sickos. It's a sobering thought that most of the people you meet on the street are nasty, manhating, racist assholes, though it has been fairly apparent for some time. Makes me ashamed to be a New Zealander.

i agree, everyone thinks she is inocent just beacuse she is a chick and all that. However if she did do it, then she is really really f**ken stupid. Having a look at the whole thing, it makes no sense at all. and now she has to pay 21 years for it. all i say it if she did it, what an idiot, and if she is innocent, bad luck.

also interesting to see that some people try to find financial gain out of someones severe misfortune...

On a related topic, I wonder what the media's agenda is for harping on about this fairly routine case. Perhaps they are making another pathetic attempt to increase support for the War on Terra by inciting hatred against Muslims. If so, it would be highly ironic given that cannabis has traditionally been well tolerated in Muslim culture. This whole War on Some Drugs insanity has been imposed on the rest of the world by the West, particularly the US, in the last few decades. Those who support Western regimes who find themselves in situations like Corby's are, in a sense, reaping what they've sewn.

I assume that all you people that have replied are males!

I believe that an injustice has been served and the three Indonesian judges that convicted her wanted to make a statement to the world that they can be an independent nation and make their own decisions. Basically they found the drugs in her bag, she admitted that the bag was hers - BAM- she is guilty! Let's not consider that the bag of marijuana was manhandled by so many people and that it was not fingerprinted. She did admit that the bag was her so of course she was guilty(Like Duh!).

Schapelle is a beautiful young woman and yes that played a great deal in the media attention she attracted. But in no way should that be hold against her! It is sexist to imply that she should not get media attention because she is a beautiful young woman. What if a gorgeous Greek God was behind bars in Bali and got the same media attention? Would you be making such a fuss then? If she were male and the same facts were presented I would believe that they would be innocent.

And for all you people that import steriods and illegal substances into the country, make sure you accept responsibility for your actions.

I agree that she took a big risk, but that's what drug dealers do - take risks. If you are going to make a living that way then unless you are at the top of the food chain, risks, including ones that seem stupid in isolation, are unavoidable. Besides, not everyone is all that bright or has a terribly accurate picture of the world, so people do actually do stupid things. In particular, pretty Western women who are pandered and deferred to their whole lives may develop a complex whereby they think nothing bad can ever happen to them, which may lead to a certain amount of recklessness.

Having a look at the whole thing, it makes no sense at all.

What doesn't make sense? Perhaps she came across a quantity of skunk cheaply and was planning to sell it to the expat community in Bali at a tidy profit. The tastes of dope smokers these days can be quite sophisticated so, contrary to media reports, there is actually a market for high-grade hydroponic skunk in Bali. To ask why this should be so when cheap local dope is available is like asking why there is a market for French champagne in NZ when cheaper local wine is available. It misses the point that you are not talking about the same product.

lol.

you do realise that when customs went to search her bag, she suddenly remembered she had somthing in the bag and told this customs officer this.

i doubt a 'male' would be found innocent. not everyone is out to scam/hate on women. get over it.

There's no reason they should feel the need to prove this. They've locked up Westerners before and they've never given any indication of feeling themselves in thrall to the Australian media. This is in fact a run-of-the-mill case.

Basically they found the drugs in her bag, she admitted that the bag was hers - BAM- she is guilty!

Why should this be so surprising? In most places, including NZ, if you turn up with 4.1kg of drugs in your luggage then you can expect to go to jail. Of course the defendant can usually claim that someone else put it there or he or she was forced to carry it or whatever, but if such claims were to be uncritically accepted then it would be practically impossible to convict most smugglers.

It is sexist to imply that she should not get media attention because she is a beautiful young woman.

It is sexist to suggest that one sex should get preferential treatment over another. If it were the standard media practice to interminably handwring when anyone were given a long prison sentence then I would have much less problem with it, although I would think they might run out of space for other news. However, it is not standard practice. This kind of treatment, when it is given, is only given to women, which is disgusting.

Compare Corby's free ride with the treatment given to this poor bastard by Australian politicians and journalists, who not only did nothing to help him but are doing their level best to railroad him, were it not for whom the prosecution case would have been dropped.

This is what happens to men who find themselves in trouble overseas. Such a contrast would only be possible in a seriously fucked up society which hates men the way the Nazis hated Jews.

What if a gorgeous Greek God was behind bars in Bali and got the same media attention?

For one thing, he wouldn't get the same media attention but even if he did, most people would probably think something along the lines of "Bit of a waste of a good body; oh well, at least the Dhaka prison population gets to enjoy him" before flipping to the comics section of the paper.

The reason for such a reaction is that even the few Westerners who don't hate men have always expected men to take our lumps without a safety net. In the spirit of equality, I think the same should be expected of women.
