site downtime

I dont seem to have a problem at the moment. I have broadband and will pretty soon move to wireless internet so I dont know what that change will mean but I understand it's faster than dial up.

I notice that this skin uses a few larger buttons and bars though and that can slow it down a little. That and folks avatars being too large when your trying to open an actual page. I have mine set to smaller sizes so folks cannot upload anymore than 100 pixels for an avatar and you can switch HTML off in the sig too to speed it up even more.

Yep, it died last night around 10.30pm.

I sent them a letter:

To whom it may concern -

My website is currently running so sluggishly that mostly it just times out.

I noticed it happened at exactly this time a fortnight ago too, so please check your customers' scheduled activities. Perhaps one is slowing down the server?

I asked about downtime before I signed up. This is what I was told: "we are nearly 100% ... the only downtime we have is the scheduled maintenace"

Since I joined up four weeks ago, I have discovered the site to be down on a number of occasions. Is there a reason for this? Can you assure me the problem is being fixed please?

Their reply:

We have found the cause of the problem and are working on correcting it to prevent future problems.

Consider them on notice.

I think my service improved things about 6 months ago and there are seldom problems now, but then I dont get nearly the same volume of traffic as you would here. I did switch at one point to one service provider and it was so slow I switched back. The service sucked also.

I've been finding things slow recently, I thought you changed services recently too

I did - the switch was made about a month ago. Has it got slower since then?

I've just turned on an option which could make it much better, or make it much worse. Let me know if it makes a difference. :P

(For the technically-minded, the GZIP option compresses the files at the server before sending them to your browser, which then unzips them. This means everything is smaller, so it may take less time to send. However, if the delay is caused by an overloaded server to start with, this will just put more load on it, and slow it up further)

Can you describe what's happening? Is there a long time before ANYTHING happens? Or is the text appearing quickly, but just the images take a bit longer to show?

Sorry about this. I chose these hosts because they'd received so many reviews praising their reliability... :(

For me it seems the images take a long time to appear, doesnt matter of it a large attachment or just the small emoticons, they all take about the same time to appear. Sometimes the pages themselves also take a while to appear, you just get a white screen for a while, but i think its mainly the images.

Ilya B: Hi how can i help you?

Andrew: Hi there. My users are reporting problems with the speed of my site

Andrew: http://www.nzbb.co.nz/forum/viewtopic.p ... 57141#2884

Andrew: ^ That's the list of complaints. What can be done to stop this from happening?

Ilya B: it loads instantly when we check it...

Ilya B: we have not recieved complaints from any other customers

Ilya B: and have not had any speed issues

Ilya B: unless you can show us a page that is loading slow or something specific that takes a while to come up we cannot really analyze the problem

Andrew: The trouble is, some of the time it works perfectly and loads instantly...

Andrew: ...and some of the time it doesn't!

Ilya B: what specific page or file doesnt load instantly?

Andrew: I don't think there's any specific page causing problems

Andrew: It can happen on any page

Andrew: So I can only assume that means the problem is with the connection or host, rather than the website software itself

Ilya B: can you put up a large file download about 5-10 megabytes on your site

Ilya B: and when the slowness occurs see if it also occurs to that file

Ilya B: that would help us analyze if its a connection or server or php [software] issue

So... here it is: http://www.nzbb.co.nz/logo.eps (6.5Mb)

Don't start downloading it until you have problems with slowdown, otherwise your browser re-opens it from your own cached version, rather than getting it off the server.

Thanks for your help, guys... hopefully we'll get this sorted quickly.

Went to download the file when i suspected the board running slow but the download speed was normal, around 35kbps, which is about right for my connection.

I deleted the file from the cache though so i will try it again when it appears slow.
