Whats the next best thing to a whey shake post-workout? basically I can't handle whey/dairy and the alternatives are not great in my opinion. So I'm trying a meal afterward instead.

Anybody else do this?

So far I've been having:

- Salmon or tuna on toast

- eggs on toast

- pasta with mince

- chicken with rice

thats sort of thing.....

There are a couple of things you want in a post-workout shake/meal...

- Sugar: this not only restores the energy spent during the workout, it increases your insulin levels which helps you absorb your protein better. The other sources of carbs you've got there (rice, pasta, bread, etc) are ok, but they won't form as much of an insulin spike.

- Protein: some proteins take longer to digest than others. Post-workout you want the protein into your system as fast as possible. Whey is obviously the best choice (in particular, whey isolate), but I'm not sure what the next best is. Possibly egg whites? I really don't know.

- Low fat: fats are important, but they will slow the absorption of carbs and protein. Save them for the post-post-workout meal.
