What to do for cardio

At the moment, I want to be able to run around my neighborhood for like 30 mins, so 3-4 KM, without stopping, and with relative ease but still able to get heart rate up.

- That is the goal.

Currently, I can do a very short jog for 2-300m and start choking up and feel pain in lungs etc.

I know for a fact when doing HITT cardio last year, very high intencity, I was able to see massive improvements in a very short time.

But the programs didnt use cardio, but more like equipment stuff and we did it under instruction.

At the moment, dont know what to do to achieve said goal, so throw some ideas / routines etc.

Currently just walking, which I like, and might still do.

Honestly a big mistake a lot of people make is they don't realise how FAST they are actually going - and they wonder why they can't run for long. Your pace should be JUST faster than walking.. so just patter along. If you can't do this I would say do a 1min jog followed by a 1 min walk around your block.. then take 10 or so seconds off your recovery time (or add 10 sec to your work time) every week or so. Pretty simple stuff but it works...

Why should your pace be just faster than walking? Or are you meaning as a starting point for someone who has pretty much zero fitness?

Yeah as a starting point. People start running and they think it means they have to go super fast. Most long distance runners (not elite) don't run fast at all but they can go forever. Then you have the elite guys who sprint 42ks lol

I can certainly vouch for this. When I drove past the Auckland marathon a couple of weeks back, it seemed like most of the runners were actually walking. ;-)

The good thing is cardiovascular fitness improves quickly as long as your consistent. Had a client of mine who was doing figure and never ran a cm go from being unable to run more than a k to running 2 marathons in basically a 6 month period. She followed some running protocol she found online and just did the work. Try going from a 60k bench to a 200k bench in that time frame :)

Buy a pink skipping rope and skip around your block as skipping is cooler than running

Skipping without a rope is cooler still.

On a more serious note, last weekend I did some HIIT on a rowing machine while listening to a podcast (I don't think podcasts had been invented when I last did cardio). It was brilliant! The time just flew by.
