I hate it. I mean I don't mind others doing it to each other but I hate people touching me pre lift or pissing crap words in my ear, trying to be in charge of my belt and wrist wraps and all that BS. Had some busy body get sidetracked and walk off with my wrist wraps when i was at worlds cause they were trying to be helpful and wouldn't leave them on the fucking chair beside me. Like I need my wrist wraps handed to me on a silver platter because I'm retarded and can't pick them up. Or not giving them to me when I want them, what the hell.  Always preferred to just be pretty calm, just be in my own zone before my lifts and fizz up inside my head. Too easy.

Army of one.

If you're reliant on others for your success, you will be let down.

Nah that was a guy from Aus he is a real good guy and they weren't too tight. They were just too tight for my liking. If you train with those guys in that gym where you can have people wrapping your knees for you every session then that tight just becomes the norm still pbed my squat. Tighter the better and the more carry over you'll get from them can't argue with that I just think you gotta be used to it. I asked him to wrap my knees anyway so I can't complain or use it as an excuse. I just saw this thread and reminded me of that so thought I would chime in. No doubt someone will take offence.. oh well lol

lmao do people actually get hyped up from being slapped?

Sometimes I slap myself, cos I have no mates, but ideally it's not great every single time you lift IMO.

I find being as calm as you can, no stims, relax between sets and trying to execute your technique as good as possible has helped me become better and also provides more confidence because I know I don't need to get all fired up to execute a set. I save the ammonia heavy metal and face slaps for when I really need them. But everyone is different.

One of the things I love about lifting heavy $h!t is that it’s not purely a physical activity.

I still vividly remember the first time I attempted to squat 800lbs.  I addressed the platform, took my position under the bar, as I un-racked the bar and accepted the weight on my back I thought “f@ck! That’s heavy!” I may as well have re-racked the bar then and saved myself some energy for the remaining attempts, as on that day I was never going to lift that weight, I was defeated by my internal voice before I even started…..

Lifting weights has no flow and is all about doing something that you couldn’t do before, unlike team sports where the game can continue on without too much thinking, lifting has no flow but at the same time the barbell gets heavier and heavier right in front of your eyes.  As this happens it is not uncommon for the internal critic to step up next to you and ask “is this too heavy?”  You know it’s going to be heavy, but have you met your match in iron on this day? No matter how well trained and prepared you are, if the internal critic is active it will cut down your efficiency in lifting.

Bringing oneself to come to a state of mental quiet, at will, is an amazing skill, and can have immeasurable value to a lifter. So how does one clear the mind when faced with a bar loaded with iron and a hoard of crazy’s screaming for them?

Everyone will do this differently but I like to do this through relaxed concentration on the present moment and placing myself into an established state of trance. When in this state I have no thoughts, hear nothing and all that exists is the bar and I in a timeless moment. When done well I often find myself carried through the door to an altered reality. Here the bar is the only thing that is vibrant against a blurred background of vision and noise and is weightless despite being heavy, and where time is rapid but seems to be endless, almost as if I’m lifting in a dream…

We can all concentrate, where we narrow our attention in both time and space, or we focus our attention on what is here-and-now. To enter a state of trance you need to focus on a narrow aspect of the here-and-now.

It may be useful for you to practice acts of relaxed concentration so as to become very familiar with the feel of slipping smoothly into a trance.

Find a quiet spot and breathe slowly and rhythmically, gaze into the distance at some irrelevant object at eye level. Do not stare or try or force your gaze as it will detract from your relaxed concentration, allow your thoughts to come to quite, again do not force your thoughts away. If thoughts come, let them go.  Do not intentionally think of them and do not try to not think of them. Simply let them go. At some point you will enter into a state of trance where the irrelevant object is vibrant against a blurred background and the external and internal noises will fade to softness, leaving you with an overwhelming feeling of calmness and relaxation, yet you will find comfort in knowing that you are fully focused on a single object and are center to the current situation. As you exit this state you begin to let more in from the outside and the world will open back up to your sensors. You may find that you are a little disorientated in time and space so take a moment to familiarise yourself in the here-and-now.

When you can enter a trance state quickly, you might like to slowly add distractions, play music, turn on the TV, or sit/stand in the middle of a crowd. Also try using other “anchors” as your irrelevant object, try a sound or a tactile sensation, find what works best for you and bring it to the platform.

Safe lifting,

May all your lights be white.

A little cheesy yeah but he's right on the money. That's kind of how I like to set up.  I need to be as relaxed as possible when I squat.  I find when I'm concentrating on aggression or being hyped up on stimulants I lose focus on the squat itself.  Having somebody wrapping me and taking away from having to do that is a big help just not as tight as tombro did mine at nats lol. Anything someone does helping me out before the squat like wraps and chalking back etc helps. Slapping my face would just get me pissed off at that person and I'd lose focus lol.
