World Masters Games 2017

Next year, the World Masters Games are coming to Auckland, and it's a pretty big deal. It's the largest multi-sport event on the planet - in terms of competitor numbers, it absolutely dwarfs the Olympics. It's expected that 25,000 athletes from 100 countries will take part.

 

At the top levels, the competition is fierce. But for a lot of competitors it's more about the fun, the experience, and maybe throwing in a holiday while they're over here.

 

The only requirement is that you have to be over a certain age... it's 35+ for weightlifting.

 

It would be an amazing event to be part of. Any of you weightlifters over 35 should consider it.

I will be 29 years 11 months and 1 day old.

Bugger! That would actually be okay for most of the sports, because (as I understand it) it's the age you will be on 31 December 2017. Unfortunately, the two exceptions are athletics and squash.

Nah, Oly lifting brackets - IWF masters starts at 35.

 

IPF Masters starts at 40 and goes up in tens.

Ahhh I didn't realise it was aligned with IOC?

I remember years ago a master's games in Dunedin that included PLing  (unless I'm getting confused with university games?).

The 'World Games' has PL by Wilks formula.

 

IOC accredition doesn't mean it goes in to the Olympics though. And it won't.
