A club rugby player has been banned from all rugby for six years, after he was found to have used and trafficked steroids.

The New Zealand Rugby Union imposed the ban on Andrew Burne, who lives in the Hawke's Bay, after he admitted three violations of New Zealand's anti-doping rules.

Burne, who was 21 at the time of the violations in 2013, had been a member of the Johnsonville club's premier team and played for the Wellington Maori team.

He was the subject of a police drug investigation in September 2013, where four bottles of Dianabol - an anabolic steroid - were found in his home, which he said were for his own use. The  police summary of facts presented in the Wellington District Court said Burne was involved in the sale and distribution of prescription medications including steroids and related substances at a marked up price, offences contrary to the Medicines Act 1981.

Burne pleaded guilty and was discharged without conviction.

Drug Free Sport New Zealand then took the case to the NZRU after interviewing Burne late last year, and he was provisionally suspended on December 23, pending a judicial committee hearing.

DFSNZ submitted at the hearing that while Burne's trafficking did not involve large quantities, it did involve a regular supply of prohibited substances to various individuals.

The committee heard that Burne started using steroids to bulk himself up and to enhance his rugby performance but was "duped" into becoming involved in the distribution of steroids amongst a tight-knit group.

I wonder if the result would have been different if he was a good player. I mean asides from to himself the ban is no great loss to a club or anything. If he was playing super rugby all the psychologists would have been dragged into court, mitigating circumstances, pressure to perform blah blah blah then an 8 game ban lol

Wow. I wonder of any of our Wellington members knew about this.

Four bottles of dbol doesn't seem like a high threshold on which to convict someone of supply? I guess maybe there was more evidence not mentioned in the article.

There has to be more to it than 4 bottles of Dbol.

All the cases I've seen on here over the years have involved recreationals. Why would the cops get involved over 4 a few hundred Dbol pills?
