Just got me 10x  13 week old Brown shavers for my backyard. As long as my dogs dont eat them should be all good. In their first year they lay something like 350 eggs each. Needless to say protien wont be an issue. Our bylaws allow up to 12. I encourage anyone else to get some as it can be done even with a smaller section

My parents used to have some but I got fed up with chicken shit all over the deck and Lawn. If they ever managed to get in the house they shit everywhere too.

On the positive it's free eggs cos you just feed them food waste lol

Fenced off half the yard too keep them contained and dogs out. I feed them the proper feed as well as  food waste just not too much more of a supplement

In that case, you should invest in a good pressure cooker, Ken.

Old, stringy, home-grown chooks are nothing like the succulent, roided-up Tegel ones. :-p

haha, yeah they are purely for egg production. and i dont have to mow half my lawn how lol

Make sure you do this equation to find out if your eggs are of healthy / safe quality, so you know if the chickens need to go to the vet for treatment / be shot with an air rifle.

Get them vaccinated for salmonella too, the ones that are kept alive.

HU > 60 = keep alive  HU < 60 = shoot / leave hungry dog in the pen with them.

Better to have 5 chickens that give eggs that will result in gains, than 10 that are retarded and whos eggs will make you sick or just result in a shitty meal.

Learned this from a member called FUBU

You thought about trying out FUBU's Egg diet? Just spend your food money on all the eggs you can buy... so many variations you could make with your unlimited milk and bread hook ups- French toast even.

Pretty sure its common for chickens and other birds as well as reptiles to carry salmonella in their gut. Highly doubt theyre immunised against it lol.

Doesnt affect their wellbeing but you can get it from them or outside of their eggs etc. A non issue unless you dont cook your food properly or make salad straight after handling unwashed egg shell without waahing hands etc.

As kids growing up, my mates and I had loads of chooks - both ex-battery (so maybe immunised?) and hatched at home (so definitely not immunised). Between us, we would have had literally 100+ chooks, and I know of no-one who has ever got salmonella.

Honestly, I wouldn't give it another thought.

Na its not ever an issue i dont think. i think years ago they had outbreaks at commercial farms etc and that might be  what started the whole salmonella with eggs  carry on.
