The return of Musashi

Once upon a time Musashi was a big name in NZ sports nutrition.

The Musashi brand was born in 1987 and named after Japanese swordsman who also authored a book on tactics, philosophy and strategy called the Book of Five Rings. Musashi products include a range of supps designed to support recovery, performance, muscle gains, fat loss and endurance (pretty much the 5 rings of sports nutrition)

In time gone by you may have not seen them around NZ but they continued their presence around the world.

Anyway as of this month Musashi is back in NZ! Have a look out for them in your supermarket

They were doing aminos and specific amino blends before anyone else. Plus they made the best protein bars which probably had zero protein in them but tasted like cake :)

Everything else they made tasted like shit so it was probably good ha ha ha

Im fairly sure ive seen it in nz supermarkets before now commonly? Think it was a 900g tub of protein for $40ish but possibly am thinking of a different brand.

It is essentially being relaunched by Vitaco (they do Healtheries) with the aim to be much more competitive in supermarkets.

Out of curiosity why don't Nutrition Systems deal with either Horleys or Balance products in NZ? Have actually been meaning to ask them for a while now but always forget.  I'm sure my first ever supp was musashi like back in 1997.  Creatine powder in sachets I think. Thought I was gonna be the incredible hulk.

NS distributes a number of brands such as big international brands whereas Vitaco does the manufacturing and distribution for its own brands such as Balance and now Musashi (among others)

They come from a time when you paid $150 for a 5lb of whey that actually had a legit 23g of protein per 30g so you def got gains but my god it was Horrible.  As Pseudo has mentioned it tasted like drinking sand.  I used to have to do the hold your nose and chug trick lol.

Im sure they have sorted out their mixability.

Yea the good old days when it tasted bad it must be good for you.

We've been busy bringing manufacturing over to NZ, I was pleasantly surprised by some of the Musashi products but some have been reformulated

I remember their bars, A sort of Dry Oat Bar which (I thought) had 30G Proterin and 50G CHO in it but shit they were dry, about the size of 2 decks of cards in a white and blue wrapper.

Thats a great analogy "Like drinking sand" P40 Protein I think it was.

Did they also do Growling Dog - Berry and Carbo Cola? That used to be regularly in the Don Olivers New Lynn Fridge. The Berry Flavour tasted great!

That's the bar and dieting they were great. Lol shit on a stick is good when you're dieting though.

I couldn't stomach their drinks except the carb cola.

That was it! :-D

It's an interesting decision to bring it back. Do you know what the thinking behind it was, @eLm0? It seems to me like there are two groups of consumers - those who are too young to remember the old Musashi brand, and those who do remember it, but don't remember it particularly favorably. Given that, I'd have thought the better option was to start with a new brand that didn't come with baggage?

There's a whole lotta reasons, NZ is an odd one but Musashi is still one of the most recognizable brands in Australia, also pretty popular in places like Japan and Thailand.

A lot of the products have been improved recently and it makes a pretty good sister brand to balance . A well-known brand with good products is bound to be a winner :)
