BENCH! why won't you grow

Recommended Posts

90kg bench is pretty good at 68kg. Tbh gonna be pretty hard to adds 10s of kilos to your bench in a hurry when you're 68kg. Do your first comp and enjoy it. You'll learn a tonne from just rocking up and competing.

Dont want to talk about myself but  I have benched 200 in comp and on training couple times yeah. I been bench pressing for over 10 years though. I wouldn't have got 200 as easily as I got it without the help I recieved from Reuben simanu on set up and teaching me about overload on the bench press. No substitute for lots of muscle mass for a big bench though. The biggest benchers Round are big guys with a lot of muscle mass.

just keep hammering it bro at 90kg Max any muscle you put on will most probably result in that lift going up simultaneously.

Well as the only bb on the site who's benched 220 for a triple... oh inclined it too ;) I've decided to toe the line and respect plers...... interesting the only guys doing 200+ benches on here don't have much of an arch and don't use an overly wide grip :) I'm referring to Hamish and Tom. They have real power though cos I can't pause anything lol

Funnily enough we both come from competitive bodybuilding backgrounds....

I hear what you're saying Harry.  There is something to be said for just getting your muscles as big and strong as you possibly can then work on your technique.

I can take a 100kg bodybuilder from a 140kg bench to a 160kg bench in just a couple of sessions with some technique adjustments.  But trying to ekk more strength out of a pler with good technique is not going to net you anywhere near the same numbers.

Thought I'd do a little bit of an update.

I've changed up my technique, taking time to set up properly, slightly widened my grip and engaging lats/legs. Doing 5x5's and pausing every rep. last couple of sets I go up in small increments of weight if I'm finding 80KG a little easy.  I am getting up 100KG relatively comfortably now with a good pause, so I'm happy with that.

S1: 80KG x 5

S2: 80KG x 5

S3: 80KG x 5

S4: 85KG x 5

S5: 90KG x 5

thanks for all the advice.

IMO youd be better off working up to your heavier sets faster rather than tagging them on to the end.

If i was going to do those sets id do like following:

S1: 80KG x 5

S2: 90KG x 5

S3: 85KG x 5

S4: 80KG x 5

S5: 80KG x 5

Except id say on those 2nd and 3rd sets you'dbe able to go heavier and still get your 5 reps being less fatigued. That's what i find works best for me anyway.

When I did 5x5 I would use the same weight for all 5 sets. I think that's the point of it. For a number of reasons. That's a true 5x5 anyway. I guess you could modify it, which you can, because that's what you're doing. Probably won't matter too much. It's a good program to build some foundation which is what you probably want being that bw and having that bp
