Hi everyone,

I joined up on this forum as late last year I decided that I want to compete this year.

I have basically been working out at the gym for a few years now with no real goal.

I was just wondering if anyone could please talk me through the best organisation to align myself with and what class i should be competing in. I am 1.82 meters tall and weigh around 100 kg, although I started cutting a few weeks ago and have already lost 5 kg.

Also, what happens during a competition? What should I be preparing for in terms of routines, posing, tanning, shaving/waxing etc.

Any help would be extremely accepted!

Thanks heaps

first time round i reckon it would be of huge value to find a bodybuilding coach locally to help you with all that.

where are you located? someone can probably recommend a coach local to you

I am located in Palmerston North/Wairarapa?Wellington. A little bit all over the place haha. However, I do have a coach that has been helping prep me. But he doesnt have a bodybuilding background so alot of the questions I have, he is unable to help me.

The absolute very first thing I would do is go along to a bodybuilding show, see how it runs, check out the conditioning of the athletes, how much muscle they are holding in each class and make a decision if it's something you are seriously interested in.  And if so what class you think would suit you the best.

Give yourself adequate time to get ready for a show.  You can always tell the people that have jumped in too early.  A Comp diet will always expose your weaknesses.  So if you have a killer chest but no shoulders you should consider what it's going to take to get your symmetry better.

Undertaking a proper bodybuilding prep of 12-14 weeks will mean you are dedicated to hitting every training session no matter where you might be and what circumstances you find yourself in.  Your eating plan will be rigorous and everything weighed and measured.  It doesn't necessarily have to be hard and exclude food groups as some will lead you to believe, but it will need to be planned out.  Using a food prep company such as *cough cough* Muscle Fuel www.musclefuel.co.nz will free this aspect up so you don't have to worry about the meals.

You will have to cut down if not completely cut alcohol consumption.

Make sure you get adequate rest

Probably all things you already do but planning will be the key.

With your stats there's lots of possible classes that might suit ranging from bodybuilding, physique (board shorts) and the in between class which is probably my favourite look - Classic.

With my first bb comp i gave myself 20 weeks to cut down. I did all prep myself and learnt a lot! I did get help on what tan to use and how much i would need from other people in the same fed. Went to posing classes to learn how to pose and show off my strengths a bit more.

Other thing is dont be surprised at how much weight you drop. I went from 114 to 97 and still couldve dropped another 2-3kg.

Thanks for that! I have been monitoring everything I eat and sticking to my macros and have been reduced from new year which is when I started cutting. My questions are more around the actual show then the preparation for the show. I'm thinking of doing the Taranaki NABBA shown in May. If I do that, I would have been cutting for around 20 weeks. I'm thinking of doing the novice tall physique class. Does anyone know how this class works? Routine etc? And is that board shorts or what do I wear. Sorry about all the questions, I have googled a lot of these, however I can't seem to find anything specific to NZ
