Upgrading the forum... er, sometime soon

You might have noticed I've not been as active here recently. I've been desperately trying to finish developing the new forum upgrade, and it's finally ready to be unleashed on the world. Well, almost ready. I still need to do a little bit more testing/tweaking first.

So sometime in the next few nights, I'll be upgrading the forum software. Not sure when exactly - it depends on the results of my tweaking/testing. But it means the forum will go down for a few hours while that happens.

So what should you expect on the new software? Finally we'll have all the bells and whistles people expect from their social media now, and most importantly, it’s good on mobile. It also allows us to develop plugins for all the extra features I want - so even if you don't see a whole of new stuff to start with, they will be coming.

I don't want to overhype this upgrade, but it’s fair to say I’m quite excited by this. Basically, this will be the forum I was hoping to achieve when we first rebuilt the site as Gymnation... so it’s only been 4 years in the making!

:D

I'm going to be like a lost puppy without the forum for an evening...

I promise to be as quick as I possibly can!

well done peso, working in this field i know how much bullshit work goes on behind the scenes for minimal front end change, dont envy what you do, but glad you do it.

Every time I go through this, I forget just how much of a pain web design is. I spent the best part of a day last week trying to get one litte, sodding box to behave itself. I fixed it in Firefox, it broke in Chrome. I fixed it in Chrome, it broke in Firefox.

:computer:

One day, I'll get my life back!

I always wondered, is this forum done on SQL or are you a brave man who uses cystal ?

It's MySQL. This software (both this version and the next) is pretty good - the database is nice and logical. The first build of Gymnation was in Drupal, and its database (although still MySQL) was absolutely hideous. Thankfully, most of that stuff is handled by the software so I don't have to touch it at all.

Fair enough mate, we don't have any SQL programmers at work but for those servers we build and have to get someone to program for our clients they do charge a pretty buck, so I can only imagine how much writing the software for this site would cost

yeah man, at my work i use sql contractors, casually couple hundred bucks an hour

We're now up and running on the new software. However the system is still chugging away, processing all our old data and converting it to the new format. While it does this, you may notice some things aren't working properly, like quotes or attachments. This shouldn't take too long to complete though. (In fact, there's a good chance it will have finished by the time you read this.)

There are a few other bits and pieces which aren't quite as beautiful as I'd like, but I'll get to them in time.

Anyway, go and explore your new forum... Enjoy! :D

Ewww. That's not quite the desired look, Soundsgood!

I'm picking this may be Safari insisting on using its own (non-standard) code. I've tweaked a few things, so hopefully that's fixed the problem. Let me know.

only issue i can see is there is no way to tell if you have read the latest post in a thread, or if it is a new thread? eg they used to be orange and go grey once you have seen them.

I swear this was working on the test site! I'm looking into it now. It only seems to be an issue on the front page, right? In the meantime, you can use the fancy new Unread Posts activity feed, or just go into the forum where the coloured icons DO work.

Still broken on Safari? What version are you using, @Bruce Al? I've tested it on two different macs with Safari - one looked ok (an overhanging sidebar, but otherwise fine), and the other was totally broken (as per Soundsgood's pic). That one I tested again this morning, and found my changes last night had fixed it.

In theory, 97.5% of NZers should be able to see our homepage as it's intended. I think that's supporting the last two major versions of every major browser.

It's doing some weird shit on my phone, if I go back out of a topic it takes me back to the old site.

That's weird all right... The old site doesn't even exist any more! This one replaced it entirely.

Are you sure it's the old site? Are there any dates that could give you a clue? (ie, there's nothing dated within the last few days) If that's the case, the only thing I can think of is maybe your phone has cached the old page. See if clearing your cache fixes the issue.
