Sorry!

This site is in read-only mode right now. You can browse all our old topics (and there's a lot of them) but you won't be able to add to them.

Well it's definitely been a while between drinks and I have to say, that between the time I joined this site and began posting regularly and now, the evolution of the site is impressive!

The only thing more impressive is the size of Gymrats signature! :pfft:

I enjoyed posting and participating on here and thought there was a good variety of content and information until I started trolling on here again recently to discover things have reached a whole new level. Top effort to all involved in building the site up, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more encompassing source of information and all in little old New Zealand.

So......... after spending the best part of 4.5 years battling/struggling with illness, which involved losing my job and being unable to work for nearly 2 years due to recovery and rehab, I have rejoined the workforce and have just completed my first week back in the gym. Right now I feel like I've been hit by a truck and trampled by wild horses, parts of me are aching that I forgot were parts!

I don't expect to be starting up a new journal or anything in the near future as I'm really unsure where things are headed training wise at the moment or how sustainable/consistent training will be, but I will be scouring the place for any useful insights and information.

In regards to my illness, I underwent 4 tumour surgeries/resections and 5 weeks of Radiotherapy to treat Aggressive Desmoid fibramytosis. This resulted in the loss of about 60% of my medial deltoid, a chunk of my lateral tricep and a good amount of brachialis. While these tumours aren't mestatic or cancerous as such, they were, in my case, very locally aggressive and grow rapidly causing significant damaged to surrounding tissue etc and in the case of them occurring deeper within the body damaging internal organs.

My last surgery was touch and go as to whether they could close the site "naturally" or if they would have to do re-constructive surgery and skin graft as well. They managed the natural option which resulted in 27 staples being placed externally down my arm and any number of internal sutures. I have some pics on my phone that I may upload at some point.

Onwards and upwards from here!

Gazza! :D

Thanks for the kind words, bro. I just had a look - you signed up in October 2004! You would have to be one of our earliest members, so it's awesome to see you back again.

Sorry to hear you've had a rough time of it. But I'm sure the training will get easier again. And if there's anything we can help with (we've got some pretty clued-up members now) just ask.

Hey, thanks for your kind words team.

As far as tumours etc go the last MRI was clear with no noticeable recurrence. I have an EMG at the end of the month to check a few things, the main problem now is the mess left behind with regards to scar tissue and the like. The growths themselves were putting pressure on a lot of nerves causing loss of sensation, pins and needles and things, restricting blood vessels at times and restricting movement, not to mention pain (which is now a daily constant to varying degrees). Now the scar tissue is having a similar affect at times, but it's manageable.

After doing a few squats 3 days ago I'm still struggling with the stairs at work (there's a lot) and whimpering like a scared puppy every time I sit on the old thunder box!! Had a headache on and off for the last 2 days from training delts and tris due to everything tightening up and rebelling against exercise.

It will get better!

In for pics. Sounds gnarly as fuark !

Be good to put it all behind you and get some consistency back in your life though and not have to worry about when you're next doctors appointment is !

Go hard man, will come back quick as I'm sure

Not as gnarly as you'd think, decent crater in the upper arm area now. Post op pics are pretty tame really, stapling job does look good though.

You R a survivor, a real warrior, lots of love ;), I have a medical condition as well than time to time tries to kill me but doesnt matter always avanti

Sorry to hear that, hope things are ok.

I was lucky, it was never cancerous, just a pain in the proverbial in the big scheme of things. Plenty of people out there going through/surviving much worse.

Hey Pseudo, yeh I joined up a while ago, funnily enough I was in the middle of recovering from an accident at the time (clumsy boss and skillsaw 1, Gazza 0) and found signing up made trolling for info a bit easier, it was quite some time before I attempted to contribute and be involved any way.
