well mate it basically all comes down to this 1 line and the hypocrisy behind it lol. it was not long ago i used to make fun of those aesthetic classes but it clicked that what goes around comes back around.

replace that with

"if you say you're not seeking anyones approval then why can't a competitive bikini model say the same"

what grinds my gears is fkloads of people out there say this same shit about bbers and plers, they say that we only try to lift heavy for attention, there is not much carryover to real life <insert desk job here> being able to bench x or squat y, having massive bicep not gonna make u strong for sport, that muscle/veins are not attractive or whatever, list goes on about women bodybuilders.. but we don't do it for attention of others, we just do it because we enjoy it. sometimes it seems no matter how much you say you don't do it for attention, people just don't get it. if you know that feel, why do you insist on applying that same BS logic to others?

Hmm what bullshit logic? Let's look at the actual motivation to bikini vs say women's bodybuilding. One is extremely popular and one is essentially viewed as a freak show. If I'm a young woman like yourself looking to compete in something.. do I choose the class I can be ready for in 6 months and is socially acceptable and even liked and held to some regard by a majority of general public or do I choose being perceived as a freak? Well bikini competitors choose their class because it suits how they wish to be viewed and gives them positive attention. Of course most (not all) further fuel the need for positive attention by posting half or fully naked suggestive pics. Hey I think they look hot too but it's obvious it's an attention grab.

Now my opinion isn't based on following a few fb pages and insta accounts.. it's based on being in the industry for a long long time and coaching athletes (I say that tongue in cheek) in all categories. So whilst a top flight bikini competitor might be someone most guys just jerk off to at their computers... I know plenty personally. And good on them and each to their own. But pursuing bodybuilding vs physique or bikini. .. that's not chasing popularity or general acceptance or likes... it's actually marginalizing yourself by choice :)

Sorry dude but hey gfy

The bikini girls ive seen on fb are massive attention whores though br0. Like they are actively seeking attention/promoting themselves via social media pretty much non stop. Maybe they enjoy competing and would do it anyway for themselves. Dunno. Its pretty irrelevant though isnt it.

As for carryover into a job, not everyone works desk jobs/at callcentres/in front of computer all day br0. Ive found being able to carry a decent amount of weight over a decent distance pretty useful in my job as well as being able to move heavier shit like excavator buckets out of the way (not big ones).

yeah br0 no denying it lol , most of them pretty much are, but so far all the BBers I see on social media. PLers not really though except for pushing certain brands of lifting gear. each to their own, i realise they gotta get certain amount of hits to make revenue off of it and qualify for advertising sponsorships and shit. the ones that aint doing any of that tho straight up whoring true, still plenty of actual hard working people there for whom its their 1st stepping stone to bigger things.

what job you doing these days man? last i heard you were doing something where you worked like 20hrs week and made 200k a yr or some shit. but yeah my response to those faggots is im not doing it for carryover to my poverty desk job or to please anyone else, it's because i enjoy it. for some reason people have such a hard time that you can do something for enjoyment, as if you have to be doing it for someones approvals, likes, subscriptions whatever 21st century nonsense!

Let's look at the actual motivation to

but.. who are you to say what other peoples motivations are? is it right to just put a blanket statement? respect that you've been doing good shit in the industry and proven yourself, but the rest is just your personal views/opinion rather than fact. i redirect you back to your signature. this is still EXACTLY what people say about body-builders, that their motivation is to look muscular for chicks or to be more socially acceptable (because lifting it's actually the "in thing" right now)

good thread, many viewpoints coming out.

And I think that's the key point right there...

The ones you see WILL be attention seekers - because they're the ones trying to be seen. Conversely, you WON'T see the non-attention-seekers because they don't want to be seen. But that doesn't mean they aren't out there.

Ultimately though, is enjoying attention so bad a reason for competing? Why is that any less worthy than competing because you enjoy looking good, or because you enjoy being strong?

exactly man. Who cares why people do this/that that is their business and nobody else's. Ateasy they are having a go.

There is something to be said about someone who says they are going to do something and do it time and time again. It's not very common these days

Exactly. Their business and no one elses. So i shouldn't see a disproportionate amount of their shitty attention whore posts but i do. Idc if ppl compete in bikini or beauty pagents or fucking chess. Just shut the f*ck up and do it. If they do that already cool.

But nah most want sponsorship...and only way to get it is to have a 'following' and easy way to get that is to be an attention whore. Its like a status symbol to say you're sponsored but do any sponsored 'athletes' in nz even get anything good? Doubt most do. Once theyre sponsored they become even more attention whorish plugging their sponsor's products and other sponsored athletes.

What do you do? What sport or activity do you participate in? Who's approval do you seek with your working out and posting on a gym related page and keeping track of the things you do in regard to such? If you say you're not seeking anyone's approval then why can't a competitive bodybuilder say the same. Competitions are personal markers of progress. I'm extremely ego driven but I wouldn't say I'm an attention whore because essentially I don't give a f*ck what anyone else thinks about how I look or what I lift or how many steroids I take. I just care about what I do myself. I'd say that's the same for a lot of people :)

Think he was being satirical haha

They basiclly get a set amount of supps from a particular brand under a particular company each year but thats really all .  So pretty much all through Nutrition Systems NZ who supply to the retailers such as NZ Muscle etc . The Athletes then promote the products , say Cellucor via their social media sites and thank the said retailer and Nutrition Systems regularly via tagging and hashtags. The athletes arent by any means required to be the top athletes in their chosen category and normally arent  but mostly have a lot of followers through self promotion and buying followers on instagram.  In return for the supplements the supplement companies get free advertising . The supplement manufacturers generally provide a set amount of free supps yearly to the big wholesalers such as Nutrition Systems . Smart business by them really.

Oh yeah I forgot about the 10% off. They do that to. I made a bit of take the piss post on IG about being just announced as a KFC sponsored athlete and how I make sure I'm always carrying a bag of KFC drumsticks in my gym bag and use my code for 10% off all quarter packs for fast gains once but it didnt go down very well. Was just trying to be funny. People got feelings hurt.

Reminds me of my receipt when ive made a putchase from the supermarket. Tells me I've saved $22.35 when i spent $150 or whatever. Pretty sure you dont save money by purchasing items and pretty sure you dont save more money by purchasing more stuff. Its called spending and is the opposite of saving.

Gymrat if you wanted to keep costs down you wouldn't buy unnecessary shit from that website. 10% off from there isnt a discount or sponsorship lol, its a joke.

Discount is like the obligatory thing to do with supplements these days. No one ever pays the shelf price. I even bought protein on Thursday and shelf price was $114, I didn't even mention price and the guy got his calculator out and said we can do that for $100. Same thing happens at every supplement shop.

Catching up on the forum after a short time away ..... great thread!

People here don't seem to realise that whoring oneself on social media is not only happening in the Bikini/Figure/Bodybuilding world:

It's fcuking filling up all my news feeds. On FaceBook, InstaGram, Twitter, Neighbourly.co.nz, Google+ and the worst of all, on LinkdIn where I'm bombarded by people telling me they're now President, CEO and Chairman of Joe Bloggs Worldwide Media and Tupperware Enterprises Incorporated!

Get used to it. Social is here to stay and grow.

If I could make a living through people clicking Like on IG pictures of me doing something I love, I'd fucking post that shit up 57 times a day.
