Motivation or discipline?

If you have to have discipline to do something its probably not worth doing. Id rather just do what i want.

In the context of lifting, if i didnt enjoy lifting weights i wouldn't do it.

Yeah this. In general i lift because 1. I enjoy it. 2. Gains. 3. Keep me on track in general in life. In this order.

Dont really need discipline or external motivation if its thing you look forward to doing eg when im at work im always looking forward to lifting after work. If i dont feel like il enjoy it i just dont go and that happens very rarely

My Sons just signed up to a gym, he`s just turned 15. I asked him why? he said to get the chicks, I laughed cos it makes it makes sense.

I do it because one day I want to compete and test myself on the platform.

It keeps me sane, you obviously feel good afterwards too and that's more than enough reason.

So one is motivated by a desire to reach a goal, and with that discipline is required.

*Not that I have the prerequisite 100% of the time. :pfft:

I don't enjoy my workouts all the time. Yday afrer my DL I want to pack my bag up and go home. But takes discipline to finish rest of my shit and I still didn't do the SLDL. My motivation to do the pull downs, rows and lying curls was zero but I disciplined to stay and do it. I enjoy getting bigger and stronger so do I train because I'm motivated to get bigger and stronger or do I do the shit I don't wanna do because I'm disciplined and I know that what it'll take to get bigger and stronger

You can interpret it all both ways like most of these quote things.

I enjoy my workouts even if my energy levels are a bit flat at times which would include when I am having a low carb day. When I did start to cut for my comp in Wellington came up with a good movational phrase which is. With each week that goes by I get closer to stepping foot on that stage in Wellington on September 19th. It helps when I am feeling tired or hungry

Don't know about discipline but i just like getting to the gym and working out, be it balls to the wall or just a light train, also getting away from the kids and the missus for a few hours is a huge bonus! motivation enough for me thats for sure!

Bullshit aside i take my hat off to those who have the discipline to train consistantly  hard and eat proper portion controlled meals 99 - 100% of the time!

In my opinion, there is a point where discipline becomes routine. Most people will think you're disciplined to go gym 4-5 times a day, watching your calories, etc. But to me, it's to the point of 'routine'. I don't consider myself having great discpline when it comes to the gym. Discpline is when you do things that you're supposed to do despite of what you want to do at that time.

But at the start, when I got 'discplined', it spread through my life. My work, my studies, romantic/interpersonal relationship. So discpline is good. When you get it in one area, it just spreads...

imo definately a balance of both. this applies to everything in life really.

motivation to go to work for most is money, for some it's because they enjoy it...you aren't motivated every day, some days you just want to call in sick because tired or feel like you're being overworked and not enjoying it, discipline overrides motivation to keep you going.

discipline is turning up on time every day and doing something, this isn't necessarily your 'best' but you're doing what you're there to do. you might be running through the motions but when you have a source of motivation, you can drive yourself to deliver better results, lets say you in a bonus based job and you need some extra money for xmas, you may find your effort naturally peaks in those times because you have that motivation.

in summary i think one must have both a good source of motivation (long term goals not short term stuff) and a base level of discipline to push through hard times to drive success.

just rough examples based on logs i read recently

no motivation + no discipline = gyzzbrah

high motivation + no discipline = a moviestar i know

high motivation + high discipline = realtalk, leeroid
