New Plymouth's Jonathan Faapoi showed he was one to watch out in the future when winning the novice division of the United Power-Lifting Association of New Zealand's North Island championships in New Plymouth last Saturday.

Making his debut at competition level in the three lift, and bench only competition after 12 months in the sport, the 136kg Faapoi successfully lifted 250kg in the squat, 145kg in the bench press and 240kg deadlift, giving him an overall total of 635kg.

"Jono is already a force to be reckoned with," said competition spokesman Chris Kelly. "The elite lifters here were extremely impressed with his lifting and expect him to rise through the ranks very rapidly."

The biggest lift of the day went to elite competitor Daniel Rudolf who squatted 360kg with ease. He is looking for a 400kg squat at the UPANZ nationals in Auckland in August.

The Redemption Strength Conditioning gymnasium linked up with UPANZ to host the championships for the first time in New Plymouth. A total of 18 powerlifters, including five from Taranaki, competed in the various divisions.
