Training in Hawkes Bay for a week, good gyms ?

Going to be in Hawkes Bay (staying in Havelock North) for the next week. Flying up tonight, bit of a last minute call up for the family so haven't had a chance to plan bugger all.

Obviously have programme to follow from coach so not keen on missing a week's worth of training, plus I'd go nuts haha.

What gyms are there that are reasonable in the Bay area ?

Couple threads on here but they old so thought the scene might have changed.

Happily travel to Hastings etc if that's where the gains are to be made.

Aspyre or Angels sound like they're the go to places ?

What sort of price am I looking at per session/week pass ?

Considering getting the week's free trial at Jetts and trolling the f*ck out of them lol. But will happily pay for a quality gym as long as it's not ridiculous.

Hasting Fitness Centre (corner of Eastbourne St and Karamu Rd) hosted the Central Districts Powerlifting Champs back in April. It ain't flash, but was handy and had a great atmosphere.

Cool, hosting a powerlifting comp is a good sign of at least a reasonable set of equipment, I only need the basics.

Nothing shiny or fancy needed.

Will go and have a look tomorrow and see what the deal is

Went and checked out Aspyre and Hastings Fitness Centre this morning.

Aspyre looked reasonable, old school but that's half the atmosphere I'd say and they don't make machines etc like they used to so the old school stuff is generally better. Was well equipped racks/barbells wise too few of each so would have been more than fine for what I was looking for. Didn't do weekly passes, was $11/session which is pretty standard I would think, except for commercial chains who charge $20+ for a casual...

Went just across the road to Hastings Fitness Centre and was a little bigger, looked like a bit more equipment, range of machines etc. Room at the back with racks, weights, deadlift area. Solid set up. Got a weeks pass for $30 which suits me as I'll be in there most days so would have been $66 at Aspyre.

Heading down for a Leg session tonight, will leave the bros to their benches lol.

Will check back in later once I've tried out the equipment etc

I'd in Havelock I'd go to a hastings gym....Napier is a bit of a trek & the havelock gyms are a bit limited.

Aspire & Hastings Fitness center are literally across the road from each other and both good. Big Ephraim & the powerlifter's train at HFC.

Other options are Swimgym, Jetts, Snap and the new Flex Fitness gym.

Yea definitely agree on the Havelock gyms being limited haha.

And yeah no point going all the way to Napier when Hastings has options that are more than adequate.

Have decided to double sessions each day while I'm here since have bugger all else to do lol.

Hastings Fitness Centre has been all good so far, did Legs there last night and some Extras/Cardio this morning. Been plenty of space and equipment etc each time.

I went to the ASN store to look for some Arginine but no success, walked out with a couple free passes to that new Flex Fitness instead so might go there for a couple of sessions just to mix it up, it's on Eastbourne Street as well so can't get too lost.

Will check back and let you lads know how it goes equipment wise etc. Sounds too shiny for me tbh but might as well give it a crack !

Quick update in case any of you jokers don't keep up with my journal, not that there's much interesting in there anyway lol.

Flex Fitness was wayyy to shiny for me. Basically just a Snap/Anytime rebranded imo.

They had a reasonable range of Hammer Strength gear along with those shit LifeFitness machines.

DBs and fixed weight barbells all measured in pounds for some reason.

Stacks were random sizes, bit light but probably plenty for their target audience.

Their dual cable pulley had a stack that supposedly went to like 250kg but I was using 150kg or so for Straight Arm Pulldowns apparently so must be heaps of pulleys inside the column to make betas think they're using epic weight for press downs etc.

One rack and one smith machine with lame bars as can be expected.

Disco lights and Top 40 all over. .. Enough said lol.

Good enough to make up a workout if you stuck but if you wanna actually train properly I wouldn't recommend it.

Hastings Fitness Centre has been legit last few sessions. Older equipment obviously but good stuff there to use. Range of Hammer Strength stuff too along with a few unbranded cable machines that I haven't used but look like they'd get the job done.

Good bars to use as a few PLers train there. Few racks, couple benches, DBs up to reasonable weight, think 55kg or so.

$30 for a week pass so can't complain as by the end of it I will have been like 8-10 times so cost f*ck all per session.

Yep, some good powerlifters, couple of 300kg deadlifters, 250+kg benchers - one guy opening on 710kg at Classic Champs in AKL on the 13th.
