Rest times

After some input here, how long do you guys rest between sets/ exercises?

I try and take as long as I need to complete the next set, but no longer at all, usually a minute or two, maybe longer if im reloading plates.

Is there any benefit to taking longer rests if not necessary?

I see/hear of some people taking 5-10 minutes between sets, seems ridiculous to me and probably detrimental because start cooling down.

thoughts?

On heavier sets i usually take between 3-5mins

On lighter sets about 2mins

Sometimes you hear guys doing meets and complaining as they only got 10mins rest between attempts. WTF

meets a bit different, 1 max effort rep is different to a set of 5 @ 75% or whatever.

also in meet it depends how you spend your time inbetween attempts, if you just sit down then too long would probably be counter productive?

Yeah just imagine hitting your PB 1RM. Then you have to recover enough for your next attempt so you can go even higher. You definately want ample rest time. 10 mins is about perfect

Not to mention the time it takes to reroll your wraps, wrap both legs then put wrist wraps on, chalk etc etc when you are squatting

But yeah anything over 15 mins and you would probably start being counter productive as you might start going cold.

On Saturday I warmed up my deadlift to 260kg single in my hoodie and track pants. Then sat down for 20min and opened on 300kg it was freezing in the gym by that time. Was fastest 300 iv ever pulled. Your body stays warm longer than you feel warm... I like to have a quick warm up then a big rest then do my attempt. Between attempts in sittinh down for ten min, the attempt before me I like to stand up and move around. I apply this to my training too, I will get warm quickly on 60-100kg then once in warm I'll build up to my work sets with doubles or triples sometimes singles. Have a big rest and do my set.

But then I watched Odell on Saturday and he is warming up for ages. But I'm not Odell lol. so it's completley personal I think. Anyway I'm talking aboit warming up not rest periods but after you warm up you rest for however long you choose so I think it's relevant.

when it starts getting heavy normally a good 4-5 mins for me, if i took any less the quality of work would be compromised greatly, no point in rushing it and grinding out sloppy slow reps, I like to fully re-charged and crush all my sets cleanly

In training I take long rests. With powerlifting it is my opinion that the sets and reps should be hard, the workout shouldnt be hard. At least it isn't with my training. I don't often leave the gym thinking I'm fucked that was hard... But after a working set I sit down and think that. Sometime my workouts will take 2 hours.

When I was bodybuilding I would be done in less than an hour I would do my big lift for that day and then just race thru all my stuff. I trained with pseudonym one time at wolfs gym and he commented how quickly I would move into next set.

And ever since then I've been trying to speed up my rest periods. Now I find you've gone and changed philosophies on me! :P

I try to keep the rests down to 1-2 minutes. At least, that's the theory, but I seldom count it so it probably ends up being quite a bit longer. (And I intentially give myself a bit longer for the working sets of my 531 exercise)

looking at soundsgood post it makes more sense now why some would require 10mins plus.

plus when i did my attempts only the thirds the a PB so the other attempts i looked at them as warm ups really.
