Accessory work when training for strength???

Recommended Posts

Whats your opinions on this.

Currently im doing a 6day split upper/lower with accessory work, but i just dont have the time to train 6days a week anymore. So im thinking about changing it to back to a fullbody split and dropping the accessory work, or atleast most of it, will keep some upper back work in.

So prehaps it would look like this (setsxreps)

Monday (volume day)

Squat 5x5

Bench 5x5

Deadlift 1x5

DB Row 3x5-8

Wednesday (light day)

Squat 2x5

Close Grip 3x5

Hamstring Curl 3x12

OHP 3x???

Facepulls 3x12

Friday (heavy day)

Squat 1x5

Bench 1x5

Deadlift 1x5

Lat pulldown 3x8-12

Just opinion not advice but wookie method is 4 x week so if training 3-4 days maybe do a seperate day for each lift so e.g 3x5 bench on monday etc and just go full intensity idk how 1x5 would help even if heavy.

Maybe see for a few weeks on your log then we can see if this is good I cant really say can I.

The most important thing are your goals. All well and good making suggestions, but without knowing what you want out of your training we're not likely to hit the mark.

Saying that, do you have time for 4x a week sessions? Upper/lower/rest/upper/lower.

My current is squat, bench, dead together 3 x a week with an accessory workout the day after last session.

Interesting, might be something i could work in to hit some isolations.

4 sessions might be pushing it. Goals are to just get stronger, around the big three.

The reason i like the texas method style is that it is simple in terms of periodization, it allows you to accumulate a fatigue debt, then recover and then super compensate and hit a rep PR, all within a week. Which allows for fast progression aslong as you dont stall (which probably comes down to factors other than training, such as sleep and eating).

Basically its what im doing now, but with less accessory work, such as no dumbell work for chest, no direct arm work, no quad isolation. I suppose its not really much different. As ive kept the upper back work as i think thats very important.

Really im just wondering how important do you guys think accessory work is, when training for the powerlifting?

its important as you dont want to have any kinks in the armour, but how important who know, me personally i just do my main lift and 1 or 2 accessory's if im in the mood as it feels good to get a good pump on..

the extra movement i do are similar to the main lifts i.e pause squats, front squats, cg bench, wg bench, block pull, def pull and odd set of curls here and there
