I notice two catorgories..

Recommended Posts

I notice two catagories in here... One for power lifting, one for body building and aesthetics.
Which has me wondering, how many in don't fit in to either category.
How many here train with no real goals in mind but instead just simply for the pure joy of doing it? Or perhaps your goal is for the health benefits.

I ask because at my gym, there are many that don't care about calorie intake. Don't care if they are bulking or cutting.. But they are there at the gym every morning pushing weights often making no real strength gains, but don't care..  And Im not talking about guys that lift light either.. Some of them push good weights around...

So I am curious, how many here push weights but don't fall in to the category of bodybuilder or power lifter? And if you are neither, why do you push weights?

I think we all started like that bro. We probably all enjoy it just as much as each other regardless if we compete or not. I decided to get competitive to test myself against others and I believe competition brings out the best in me as far as progress goes. I trained like that for years just going in and lifting and I think when I'm older and stop competing I'll probably go back to just doing the same. Nothing wrong with that at all.

That's not a hard one. Some people go to socialize, some go to get muscle so they can reel in the chicks, some simply go because they have nothing better to do with their time. Gyzznizzle is probably an example of the last one I stated..

I started because I was insecure with my body . Putting on a bit of muscle gave me confidence which transfered over to everything else. Now I train purely for strength. I have no real goals of competing because to me 100kg is 100kg no matter where I lift it but may jump in a comp if they need numbers. I just simply enjoy it or in fact need it. Like an addiction.

It'd be interesting to know how they started out. I'm betting they probably joined the gym because (like many of us) they felt self-conscious about their body and wanted to change it. At that point, they probably were pretty meticulous about their diet/training. Then after a while, they reach a point where they're happy enough with themselves that the drive to keep progressing fades, other things take priority, and they just train for fun.

Well i can share why I started out.. Seen a muscly dude one day and found out he owned a gym. He looked ripped and muscly as.. All us young guys were really impressed.. In awe.. So went along to his gym for the hell of it.. And was hooked. Never had any goals ever really.. Just pushed weights. Still to this day, many years on, have no goals other than to push weights. Don't know why, don't really want to get big, but I do get a buzz out of making good strength gains.  I dont really understand my addiction for pushing weights, other than I feel like shit when I dont train..

haha, nate, bet there are lots more reasons too.. fark that Arnold looks awesome.. Makes me want to get strict with my diet... Oh to look half way as good.. I can remember years ago this samoan dude in our gym.. Suddenly just bulked and got ripped to shreds..  My mrs saw him at a party one night at her work break up..

She said all the girls were just drooling over him.. She walked on him banging one of them on the bonnet of a car in the carpark... The she said "fark me if an hour later I caught him banging the secretary... lol...

Always wondered what my mrs got up to that night... :-(

i dont understand people that go to gfym without a plan and a time frame

people act like there is no cost to the body for pushing weight when the reality is there is so what the the point in pushing weight year in year out recking yr joints to end up looking the same or not getting stronger, makes me shake my head

I think it's easy to understand.

Think of them like people who play touch rugby with friends just for fun. Don't care if they win or loose - they are just out there for a bit of fitness, bit of fun, and a laugh with mates.

nah, feeling self-conscious is why we get a home gym to start!  Go public when ya look less shit.  Or get over all that silliness of course.

With the amount of time people spend staring at themselves in the mirror, I doubt they are that aware that anyone else is there

Wow, that's not a sport I'd ever associated with the gym. What sort of training do you do? (Welcome to Gymnation, btw)

I just started a basic strength program - squats, deadlift, bench press, overhead press, and barbell rows. Seems to be working out quite well so far.

I started going to the gym to train for downhill mountain bike racing. Now I'm finding that the strength training itself is quite fun, and I'm interested to see how strong I can become.

have you ever broken both your arms in a bike crash?
