Olympic lifts . Do they help powerlifting?

Recently I've seen a huge increase in powerlifters on social media implementing oly lifts into their training with the theory that it will carry over to their powerlifting lifts. Even a couple doing crossfit.

I wouldn't say its any of the top powerlifters or record holders doing it but its a definite increase in the mainstream lifters. Anyway how many of you have implemented these into your training and if so has it helped with your other lifts or do you think its a waste of time and you should stick to powerlifting moves ?

I think time is better spent on other movements than learning the oly lifts and getting mobile enough to do them. That is my opinion. I would never learn the CJ or snatch unless I wanted to compete in oly lifting, I don't really see what benefit that time spent on it is to my powerlifting. I have done hang cleans and power cleans in my training before mainly because I enjoy doing them

and like a new challenge. Is there crossover and is it more beneficial than doing what your doing... Im not convinced.

maybe no crossover but they're a fun application of strength and good way to develop athletic power if that's what you are looking for. as tom mentions,s ome of them quite technical and require significant investment in time just learning them and getting flexible enough to do properly... i actually hurt myself mucking around and not having flexibility to do, still have pretty bad wrist pain since like a yr ago lol.

have to admit, oly lifts definitely fun (when they don't hurt) and good to implement to change up from the same old if that what you looking for.

If you lack flexibility, they will wreck you.

There is not a ton of benefit in my opinion. I trained with a NZ Record holder who broke his wrist doing powercleans.

The time it takes to do them proficiently with heavier weights isn't conductive to powerlifting.

And I say this as someone who has cleaned 200k.

Technical lifts that demand a high degree of mobility and proficiency. The time needed to perfect them and maintain the physical competency required to perform them is better spent elsewhere. I don't think the exercises in of themselves are something that would be of huge benefit to powerlifters or bodybuilders but the principle of eccentricless training could be beneficial.

I gave oly lifting a go a while ago. Hoping to improve my form as always and learn some more movements to mix things up as I ffollow a basic stronglifts 5x5 in my garage. Which I adapt to whatever equipment is available in in whatever shithole hotel gym I end up in for weeks at a time.

I paid my casual fees and jlloin in the olympic lifting session at a crossfit gym.

Tje issue I had was the rushing through the lifts I hate bad form and it seemed speed was more important to that trainrr than correct form.

I liked the lifts though but id rather be doing them right than fast against a clock.

Does any one now of a decent PT rwho can teach oly lifts in auckland or Northland?

I know that there is a hardcore of oly lifters at clubphysical new Lynn but my mum lifts there so that is out of the question. .

I did weightlifting before powerlifting and if you haven't got the technique or flexibility you will be wasting your time. I still do high pulls to help my deadlift and have always had a good deadlift.  As to powerlifting helping weightlifting... I do think doing bench properly should help your set position for weightlifting. The tight locked back is what you are looking for in both snatch and clean and jerk. I found it helped my weightlifting anyway.

Gillies Ave, Netfit, Northsport and Functional Strength are the top weightlifting gyms in Auckland.
