New year new me right?

Thinking of learning mma seeing as there is a good club nearby be a good way to make life a little more interesting new hobby and all.

Anyways, used to do taekwondo two years back was pretty shit imo but got decent cardio and learned basic techniques. From the looks of it mma's pretty (very) cardio intensive and I get gassed walking stairs, so for the people here that do mma what's some good conditioning work you guys do to keep fit, besides running which Im probably gonna have to do?

What about stretching, taekondo was pretty big on that so how much does mma demand it, better get those hamstrings loosened up if it is ay.

Also clich'e, but what's it like, did you people find it helpful, fun etc, learn any cool shit?

Have a thai mate that did muay thai since 5 or something. Seen him juggle two butterfly knives. Can kick down a banana tree too!

Not really interested in self defense though. Actually the mix of fighting styles is what turns me on, more variation and stuff. Once I can run 2k I'll sign up they have a free trail so can leave if not nice.

Stair runs is prob the best conditioning you can do haha.

RIP sweet prince,

The most practical thing to prepare for it is just some cardio/runs and some weights. I wish I did some more weight work when I was big into Muay Thai

Apart from tht just get into it. At some stage you'll be conditioned and have decent technique.

Ground work is a different beast, I've always found general cardio and weights work didn't do well with that, a lot of grip work and muscular endurance stuff might help.

Don't expect to master anything for a while though, But again just dive in mate.

Good luck have fun!! Martial arts is an awesome application of body building or strength training.

Best way to get fit for ground combat is to do ground combat... Also you gotta remember to breathe. People don't breathe, they do this (or don't do it) without even knowing they aren't breathing. Almost like they forget to breathe under a high stress situation. Holding your breathe and doing anything physical will sap you. It's not just the ground fighting that's so exhausting.

Ever tryed swimming freestyle with random uncontrolled breathing? You'll tire out faster than bjj.

imo running only helps to a point

fitness at doing standup or fitness at doing bjj is king

can run 10k but gas in 1 round of either imo

was lucky i did "boxing" cardio for ages which helped a lot with mma, different kind of intensity to running etc

just do it

Bro that's cause when u run 10km u breathe... And in the 1 round of bjj you hold your breathe. Top bjj fighters aren't the fittest people... A boxer and a wrestler are much fitter. Exp bjj fighters could fit for hours it's actually pretty low impact and low intensity. Beginners just use strength and hold breathe that's why seems so amazingly difficult. I'm not expert actually I know f*ck all bjj but I know about the importance of breathing

Too true hahah.

Yeah when rolling the guys that are good reserve so much energy, and have that iron grip. Just sustained strength, very low intensity. A different type of fitness.

Also using good technique in bjj generally means you're using more of your body an it seems fairly easy compared to just using brute force. I wonder how much bodybuilding helps bjj, there is a fair amount contractioe force used.

lol guess deleting all records creates lots of new interest with people wanting to "create" records

i reckon each fed having records is stupid, im only interested in all time competition record for each weight class, raw

eg best ever squat at x weight =

no point having any other kind of record i would have thought?
