Grunting/Hoods banned in CityFitness

Anyone else see this? I dont grunt, but for those that do, i think its a load of bullshit. Part that really annoys me is the banning of hoodie wearing (w/ hood up). In no way whatsoever does wearing a hood affect anyone else. Personally, sometimes i wear my hood to zone in to my workout, and shut out the people around me.

Yeah probably gonna change gym now eh.

Wow. That's pretty hardline.

I guess it depends what's classed as a grunt. I can see that if people are constantly screaming like female tennis pros, then that's a bit much. But in 10 years of training, I think I've only ever encountered one such dickhead. And frankly, after everyone starting sniggering at him, he changed gyms pretty quickly anyway. It's hardly a big problem. And if we're talking little grunts, well that's just plain stupid - are they wanting people to train hard or not?

Yeah i dont get it eh. There was a whole revamp of the infrastucture just recently. Think it came with the new owner. $7 memberships for a wee while, now it gets HELLA packed. Although there were some really good policies introduced.

But yeah, when theres dudes front raising 50kg DBs (like today), i dont know how they expect them not to grunt lol. Not sure to what degree these new rules will be enforced at my gym (CF Moorhouse, Chch). First i heard of it was from this article.

The rule changes followed change in ownership of the franchise. I doubt they will be enforced as hard as planet fitness or les mills if at all. And hoodies aren't a big deal really. I do suppose if gyms decided to over enforce some bs rules they would be met with boycots etc.

Though this points out to the gradual emasculation of society - you go to the gym to be fit, not gain muscle. Saw one skinny dude and his mate at my gym doing 60 kg deadlifts, when he said I think 60 is enough, I don't wanna look like a faggot and grunt.

Same thing happened with the pt when she was offended with the sound of plastic plates slapping together.

Men aren't expected to act like men anymore.

nz version of planet fitness lol, will still appeal to many i guess but not for most of us who like to train hard and heavy which is what their new business model seems to be all about (get all the non hardcore people into the gym by making accessible pricepoint and appear friendly by getting rid of folk who might be slightlest bit intimidating)

I agree with the no hoodies up completely.  Who do you think you are? Kai Greene?

Its intimidating and menacing.  You can't wear hoods up at the local malls here either which is a good thing.

If City Fitness want to keep the hardcore trainers who grunt and drop dumbbells away then good on them.  Its a smart business move.  A lot of the members they are trying to attract are the ones who don't train hard, read magazines on the treadmill, make f*ck all gains but still happily pay their membership fees.  This will attract even more of those kind of members.  Its a private company they can do what they like.  If I owned a gym chain thats probably what I'd do too and only have dumbbells to 30kg.  Bodybuilders train the most often, need heavier equipment, break shit and can be intimidating to Mrs Joanna Average just wanting to use the cross trainer twice a week.

Its hardly a national tragedy, at last count their were 650 training facilities in NZ, just move gyms if it affects you

WTH.  Whats wrong with hoodies? It really does not effect anyone at all unless that person wants to be a pervert. The other people I see in hoodies are minding their own business quiet, big and solid looking, and just getting on with their workouts.

I wear my hoodie all the time CF moorhouse for years even talk to the trainers/staff never been asked to remove it.

I do take it off if I get too hot, mainly half way through leg day or back day during summer. I sometimes take the hood down between sets to cool off. I like to pull it up during my set as it kind of helps me focus without that peripheral vision distraction.

Its more hygienic, you dont get your sweaty skin on contact with benches. Covers up my physique so I dont have to worry about girls/guys perving at me. Narrows field of vision during reps. Less sweat left behind on equipment to wipe down. Gets you warmed up faster especially during winter.

I really cant see a problem with hoodies. I suspect it is a snoby class/race thing?

What they should ban is tank tops singlets. :pfft:

Dont have to be Kai Greene to wear a hood. I can understand it being intimidating, but its not my fault if someone chooses to be intimidated by hood wearing. And it isn't menacing at all, by definition of menace. Cant wear them at malls for identification reasons (i.e having to identify a shoplifter).

But yeah, most other things, from a business point of a view, i can agree with you. Guess i just find it so frustrating because it affects me personally.

So yeah like i said, depending on how these policies are introduced/enforced, i probably will change gym.

Bro don't change gyms because you think your doing something special, like those guys that say they can't fit into jeans because they have big quads when really they just do it for the sake of being different.

If you are at a commercial gym then suck it up I highly doubt they will be so stringent in the first place unless your doing it for attention. I bet half the people complaining on fb never even grunted before but just want something to talk about lol.

You're missing the point.  You aren't the clientele they want there if you feel like wearing your hood up.  The kind of people who find it intimidating are the ones they want there.  I don't give a f*ck, I'm not imtimidated by someone wearing a hoodie lol.

Im not saying its right or wrong its what they have decided.

lol not everyone just gives up on there workout when it gets hard gyzzbrah. noimsayin. i probably will end up changing gym, to one which has a better environment.

as soundsgood says they are a business and can do whatever they like. They will probably lose 5% of their members and gain another 50% who will go once a week for a month of their yearly contract.

I think its more about your demeanour, If your quiet and courteous, put your weights away, and  a regular that turns up about same time 5 days a week. Gets to know staff on duty. It's ok.

I think City Fitness moorhouse dont have a problem with me in a hoodie. Well I have never been asked remove it in the years I been going. Maybe the club managers have a say in how strict they enforce the rules. Never been to another cityfitness though.

Yeah I would not walk around in a hoodie if I went a new gym though, Just pull it up during a set.

I personally like to wear a hoodie while I'm on the cross trainer or stair stepper purely for the fact the i want to sweat it up listen to my music and blank out the world simple! How the f*ck can someone be intimidated over that? if your intimated f*ck off to Contours!. Typical of the Femme Nazis the cunts get womens only gyms womens DEDICATED areas in some gyms and yet moan because some c*nt is wearing a hoodie because it intimates them? i highly doubt its men who get intimated?, who gives too fucks what someone is wearing?  i go to the gym to train if some c*nt is on fire i wouldn't even bother to walk over and piss on them to put them out, unless your one of those faggots who goes to the gym to be part of the Brady bunch or make bossom coffee buddys f*ck that fucken shit.

Train, eat, shit, sleep, repeat

There are probably a few extreme grunting cases that genuinely upset people, but on the whole I reckon the "no grunting" is just a smokescreen, and really it's just economics disguised as "social responsibility".  Or simply put, it's a way for these gyms to get free promotion in the media, and increase their paying membership base without increasing (long term) the number of actual bodies in the gym.

The namby-pambies that are attracted by the muzzling of lifters are the same people who turn up 4x a week for the first month of their membership, then 2x a week for their second month, and then drop off to <1x a week after that because "my life is so busy".  They make far less use of the gym's resources, and therefore their membership is a lot more profitable to the gym.

Compare that to lifters (and other committed gym users).  Most of us hit it 4-6 days a week for at least an hour a pop.   That means we occupy the gym about 4x more than the average.  So to look at it from the gym owners perspective, at any given overall occupancy target, they can have four members for just one of us.

At risk of sounding nasty, this seems to be another case of foreign ownership choosing profit over service, and imposing an overseas operating model on an established and already successful Kiwi business.
