Give me some competition ideas

Right, so I've got these cool Gymnation tshirts, we need to promote Gymnation more, and the Gymnation community is celebrating its 10th birthday this year. That all seems like a good excuse for a bunch of easy competitions.

So here's the idea... A new competition every day for 10 days.

- They should be easy to enter.
- They should be easy to win (at least some should be simple prize draws)
- They should appeal to people of all levels and sporting codes (although we can run separate competitions for each)
- They should be shareable on Facebook and Instagram. Bonus points for encouraging people to share.

Here's what I've come up with so far...

1) Find the earliest registered member (or one for each year)

2) 10 shirts for 10 mates. Nominate 10 people, and you’re in to win.

3) Post your Before photo – where did you start from?

4) Post your goal. What will you be doing in 10 years time?

5) Post your best gym meme.

6) Post your best inspirational pic/quote/video.

7) .....?

Obviously, I'm running out of ideas, and need some help. What else can we do?

Whats the goal of this? is it to attract more users onto this site? Im guessing a comp or two run through Facebook would be an option if so but you want people to sign up here who will stay, not just people who want a free t shirt. Maybee tag only people you know who actually work out. Is your instagram Gymnation.nz? Would be cool to run some lifting comps to attract outside people and run them through facebook as there are some strong units out there.

How about,

our (gymnations) overheads have gone up, so let's see your overhead (press) go up.

But srs if its a strength based comp obvilously the strong guys clean up, which is logical.

how about a strength based comp on one of the big lifts but as a most improved lift, ie percentage increased over a given time span.

this is probably a shit idea as everyone would pretend to be weak for their first lift. But just throwing an idea out there.

Or a bodyweight rep challenge (probably squats as most people can easily rep their bw), and just pick random people who entered. They are always fun and easy to get involved with. Maybe have different classes for stronger people like, 1x bw, 1.5x bw, 2x bw then the stronger guys can enter the higher ones or all of them and have more chances to win.

Biggest cheat day challenge lol? Prolly another chit idea

If you want people to follow your Facebook page you need to have it updated with things regularly for your target audience. Girls want to lose weight and guys mostly wanna get jacked and strong so putting in articles, diet plans and workout routines will keep people following. Put on some before and after pics . Post a few members vids. Giveaways for tagging friends etc. Get some sponsors on board. Do challenges on there open to the public. Get them to sign up here.

Actually a good approach.

Most people wouldn't give the time or effort to post here regularly though, but this way might attract others that are more interested in getting involved.

Absolutely. It's to get people signing up on Facebook and Instagram - and then hopefully coming through to Gymnation.

One possibility is to promote the competitions/giveaways on social media, but actually run them on Gymnation. That would limit the appeal on FB, but it might mean more people actually sign up on this site. Or it might mean everyone just CBF at all. What do you reckon?

Is your instagram Gymnation.nz?

It is, but beyond registering the name, I haven't done anything with it yet. It will happen soon though.

Good advice, thanks Skeletor. And that's exactly the plan.

I'm currently talking to a couple of sponsors about some new sections - feature articles, tools, and interviews with elite athletes like we did for Cirque du Soleil. We will be running more competitions and giveaways (both here and on Facebook/Instagram). Basically, it's all stuff that gives people a reason to talk about us.

Realistically, I suspect I'm not going to have time to do it all myself. Currently I'm doing a lot of web development, but even once that's out of the way, I still need to be spending the time elsewhere... on moving the site forward, helping the moderators as activity starts picking up again, and doing sponsorship proposals for the big features I want to add. I'm sitting on a heap of grand plans that I really want to have a crack at. To free me up for all that, I need someone to help run all the day-to-day competitions.

What we need is an official Gymnation Games-meister. :D

Agree with skeletor whatever we do gotta aim at keeping people here rather than just randoms coming in for prizes like the last comp and not even logging in ever since

Maybe if you just ran a different competition every month with a prize worth $100-200 rather than a stupid comp once a year more people would join and do the comps and actually participate/stay here. Even if you did this with the current post/pic of the month prizes it would be better than giving it to a random post/pic and you could increase prize value if you got more stuff from sponsors. For lifting based comps though e.g most reps of 60kg bench or most weight for 5 reps deadlift its only going to work if peoples vids are submitted then kept private and all released once comp is over otherwise weak people will have no incentive to enter if their lifts are already beaten significantly.

We already have that, and it's been running for years - http://www.gymnation.co.nz/forum/general-chitchat/nz-muscle-post-photo-month-competitions

There also hasn't been a lot of competition for it lately, so write an informative and helpful post, or submit some impressive pictures or videos, and your chances are really quite good.

Actually, we've always found the opposite - people think it's not worth entering because they just assume someone stronger/bigger than them will beat them. That's exactly what happened with last year's Summer Challenge. The overwhelming feedback was "more prizes, not bigger prizes, so more people have a chance to win." And when, halfway through the competition, we added in the spot prizes to address that, suddenly people started entering.

But I take your point in terms of different sponsors and different comps - and I agree. That's exactly what I see our Games-meister doing.

Anyway... that's all discussion about future competitions. Right now, I need ways to give away these tshirts.

Run a "Where in New Zealand is........." with clues being hidden in posts on Gymnation amongst various threads.

The theme might be about gyms, or where users are based etc but should get users to visit site andget them reading various threads and maybe posting in order to get clues.

You should at least give T shirts to each regularly posting member who has achieved the most competitively in thier particular sport this year.............or even most improved member i.e someone who has made the most progress either physique wise or strength or whatever, then you could include non competitive members as well. Also a t shirt to those new members whom have made a positive contribution to the site (by giving good advice etc) . Because there are members who may not provide an individual stunning post (therefore winning post of the month) but thier overall positve contribution should be recognised.

Now, you didn't read my first post, did you, Aylmer? Admit it - you skim-read it at best!. :D

The main point of this is to use Facebook and Instagram to get new people aware of Gymnation's existence.

So the best competition ideas will be low-effort (comments, likes, tags, and shares are good) with high "spreadability" so people's friends also see it.

A simple comp on instagram. Win a $100 NZ muscle voucher and 2 Gymnation Tees. Simply like this page and tag 2 friends who lift. More entries for more tags. Easy and will attract a lot of followers. The bigger the prize, the more attention it will get. Chuck in some supps, lifting straps , sleeves or anything. Or do a separate one for makes and females.Orotein creatine and a tee for him. Protein , fat burners and tee for her.
