Choosing the right fitness course..

Which do you consider are the top intuitions for candidates seeking entry level fitness instruction qualifications?

I was thinking of doing NZIHF (New Zealand Institute of health and fitness), Max Fitness college or doing a short course at AUT. Or is there another institution you would recommend?

I would be grateful for your thoughts :)

- wasn't sure what forum to post this in.. :/ - just realised should've probably posted this in general chitchat..

Thanks for the replies guys! 'kpat102' that's good to hear, I have just emailed AUT for some more information about the course eg course outline/fees/dates for early 2015. 'Pseudonym' here's the link to the course if you have time to check it out I would value your opinion :)http://www.aut.ac.nz/study-at-aut/study-areas/sport--and--recreation/qualifications/short-courses

What's your background, and why do you want to enter the fitness indsutry? What do you expect to get from it, and what do you expect your day to day work life would entail?

I'm not questioning your motives, but providing some questions for you to reflect on yourself, if you haven't already.

For the time and money invested, the AUT course is probably your best bet for a decent overview without fully immersing yourself into it if it turns out being the wrong move for you.

How short is AUT's short course? I know there are some that are REALLY short (don't know whether AUT's one of them though) Do you think it teaches you enough?

2 weeks is the shortest I know of, and it's just about bums on seats. A good fast track into the industry for those with previous experience and knowledge, but for many others it's downright irresponsible and dangerous.

Bruh, Im currently doing a level 3 and 4 course through NZIHF, and I would highly recommend it. Im doing it more for knowledge gained than starting a new career but it is very in depth and thorough in all aspects of fitness and the industry. If you want any more info ask away.

Micah.

Why do you even have to do a course at all? What a waste of time, money and lost earnings.

Man, you really are just a super duper positive type person aren't you?

Have you seen what they teach in these courses?

The short courses I've heard details of are absolutely terrible.  Graduate with a piece of paper, misinformation, and a light wallet.

Yep. There should be an industry standardized exam, if you have the knowledge and pass you're good to go, doesn't matter how you got that knowledge. And it needs to be much harder than most I've seen.

I'm also not a fan of the REPs system at all, probably biased, but for some reason my Bachelors in Exercise Science doesn't qualify me to be REPs registered. Instead passing an exam for a 2 week course (that I never took, just sat the exam) does. Of which it was entirely multiple choice questions, and I was finished in 15 minutes. Total joke.

Lol my mates doing it and he says its basic and pretty much waste of $3k aside from being able to say you are a 'qualified pt' at the end of it. Not entirely sure why he wants that. Good scam though, 10/10.

I'm not sure why to get a job as a gym instructor or personal trainer there is even a pre requisite for having done some kind of course anymore. The courses are getting shorter and shorter and the only thing increasing is the price not the knowledge or skill. Seems like the more money you are prepared to pay the faster you can be 'qualified'. The entire thing is just a joke.

'Hi I'm John, Im your personal trainer. I have done a 12 week online course and have no idea what I'm talking about but I'm going to charge you $60 per hour anyway'

In my opinion the industry should be regulated and audited like a proper industry. similar to how reps is set up but without the greed and total bullshit that clown who started it preeches. Kind an authority or governing body. I'm not sure how it would work.

agree

i have had 3 pts at various times for 1 off sessions either because free session when signed up for gym, or compulsary 1 pt session at new gym in aus.

both times can safely say as of right now i am far more knowledgeable then those muppets (and i only know what i have read on this and other sites/books etc)

they have been only good for giving me the same 3x week whole body workout they give to overweight middle aged women but each time i've gone along with it just to see what they come up with

experience is far more valuable than a 12 week course, so it is stupid that someone who has done the course is "allowed" to be a pt, while someone with for example 10 years experience lifting/training themselves/research/ etc isnt

should be properly regulated like realtalk said.

I dont know so what sort of money do these pt's earn anually? Is a sort of go between for students trying to make extra cash? Are there pt's out there truly trying to change somebody's life, through what they know and passing it on to clients..who may end up being friends with?..Or pt's ( run of the mill) dare I say it actually..truly want to make a difference in someones life..is it about the money...I know lifestyle would be one cos they like to look fit and strong..

I live in Sydney (don't hunt me down please) and pts charge anywhere between 60 (if they're like 18 and know nothing) and 120 (if they think they're awesome and have really awesome marketing)

It's a good earn when you have clients. Getting the clients is the hard bit. My pt is awesome and on the cheaper end of the scale.

Nah he must be doing a different course. I only paid $2000  for mine. It's not a scam, it's all legit.
