I refuse to believe that this forum cannot be consistently constructive, all it takes is for people to make a commitment to contributing in a positive manner.

But there does also need to be standards of behaviour set and adhered to, rules are one way of enforcing this, but the willingness of people to stand up and say no this is not acceptable is another.

Actually it would be better if it never had to happen at all but this is a rarity. I note in other forums contributors are notified that moderation will be effected if posts become unreasonable.

This whole Gymrat situation is probably jacking up the site stats so good for Pseudo. Gymrats journal is probably the most popular thread on this whole forum and how many topics have been started about him? How many posts have been made? Tbh I don't care whether Gymrat stays or goes although I find his arrogance annoying.

I need to get back to Gymnation 2.0 development, so don't have time to make a long post on this (and you guys have already said everything that needs saying), but here's some thoughts based on a few things people have said.

 

forum's boring now and been that way mostly for ages ... 1.5-2 years ago and earlier this forum was good.

So the site's been running 10 years now. IMO the best years were probably around years 5-8. That's not when we pulled most traffic, but that's when there was a really cool community here, and members were engaged and active. There were blow-ups and hissy-fits, of course, and people still took the piss sometimes, but the general culture was much more friendly. It was that culture that attracted more members, and we grew bigger to hit our peak traffic period (well, so far!) in about year 8.

But here's the thing... although page views have dropped since that last peak, our visitor numbers have remained the same. What that says is people are still interested in the site, but they're not as engaged as they were.

There are two main reasons for this:

1) Technology. Nearly a third of our visitors are now browsing on a mobile phone. The current site sucks if you're on a phone. It also doesn't feel as slick and modern as it should, or have all the bells and whistles that people expect now (notifications, etc). The new site will address these issues to a large degree.

2) Community. Like I say, it's the community that attracts most people - they just want to find people that are keen and friendly and interested in the same shit as they are. They don't want to see people being nasty. Which brings me to this point...

probably pesodo need some marketing ideas? doing comp isnt good idea to attract new members IMO as people only come for the prizes then dissapear

Exactly. I could have the greatest marketing in the world, telling everyone that Gymnation is the place to come for friendly, helpful advice from really cool gym members with loads of experience and knowledge that they're happy to share... but if people turn up and find a nasty vibe to the place, they'll just leave again.

The marketing, competitions, and ideas to attract new members are only good if the community can follow through.

I can get people here. But it's you guys that make them stay or not.

 

Its the same on most bodybuild forums, everyone gives each other shit. Its not really a friendly helpful community in some ways.

It's not totally a bodybuilding thing, because we've been a friendly helpful community before. We can be again!

Haha! Actually, it's this last week I took off work - which is why I haven't been online here much either.

My plan was: finish the new site over Labour weekend, go live on Tuesday, with the rest of the week on call for bug fixing, and then go away diving for the weekend as a much-needed break. That got changed to: go live on Thursday, with Friday for bug-fixing, and I can still go diving. It's now Saturday, the site's not live, and I'm not diving.

It shouldn't surprise me... I started this process in February.

I can understand some of the frustrations from some people here, as a lot of good info and advice has been passed onto gymrat, and a lot of the time he ignores it as it hasn't been what he wanted to hear. The same info is repeated by multiple people in various threads where he has asked the same questions over and over hoping he would get a different answer. When people are willing to help out and the adivce is ignored constantly, eventually people are going to give up. This is where a lot of problems started from.

 

Sorry to hear gymrat has left, as his journal was always a great read. I wish you well gymrat, hoping to see you improve yourself and get back up on stage again one day.

The thing is I did ignore shit the only time I replied was because I was just as happy to give it back. But Gymrat can't that's a autism issue and nothing can change that, and while he was okay with the shit, I did stand back but once it went too far I would step in if I could even if to take a little of the flack off him.

Gymrat has found himself another forum to participate in, although I suspect it will not give him as much enjoyment as Gymnation, he is receiving attention and not being hassled.

If I could be so bold and I do not mean to be rude or over bearing but I may suggest one way to get him back here!

Prove that your words off missing him and not hassling him mean something, come up with someway of sponsoring his travel and accommodation to the Wellington Show and Christchurch Nationals next year.

I am sure Pseudo would be willing to hold funds in trust until Gymrat has proved and completes the shows. 

In this way he has an obligation to the site and persevering with getting back into posting, and you will have your Gymrat at least until the Nationals next year!

want him back but not gonna bottlefeed the guy, much effort has been put into it in the past and failed with nothing to do with our commitment/support to him.

pseudo actually organised a fund scheme for gymrat ages ago to get him to his 1st show...i hate to say it but gymrat didn't do jack about his diet, he kept everyone feeling pretty pissed off for ages too in regards to NOT posting any progress pics. he was also fairly misleading about the kind of weight he was shifting and very single minded when it came to accepting all the good advise he was recieving in those days (way before people were queing up to troll him with crap). people were putting in genuine efforts to bring him up some even volunteering personal training. 

 

none of that excuses the circumstances in which he was made to left, he was bullied away but buying him back is not the answer. if anything would give him more of princess syndrome and ignore even more future advice. 

 

would be nice to have him back, i'm sure he will come around eventually when he's had a little time off. i also post occasionally on the other forum and it's also got a nice atmosphere. i like their forum software too, but when we get our gymnation 2.0 upgrade it's gonna be better gymrats eventually gonna get bored of that place because while they are giving him some attention now, it's not as busy a forum as here. he won't be getting his daily dose of attention but i guess at least he won't be bullied either. if anything, he has a better chance of getting sponsored there than here though, the owner of that place is also a pretty good guy like pseudo and possibly in better position to offer such a thin got gymrat if that's what hes seeking.

Clearly I missed the mark, I will admit I am a person who says what they mean and do not miss lead people intentionally, I was destined never to fit in here.

It is a shame that the forum lose members, few seem to care or worry about it, it is going to take a lot to change the tone and character of the site, as clearly most of the members are very comfortable with this style.

i do understand that Gymrat has pissed off many of you but really is it him who can't improve or is it that members here can't move on.
