Fundraising brainstorm

The biggest strongman show in this part of the world next year is the inaugural Arnold Classic Australia Pro in Melbourne in March.

I've just got the difficult news that instead of the initial plan to allow NZ'ers to qualify in a standardised event here, the only qualifier is being held at the end of January in Victoria, Australia's Strongest man.

1 Aussie and 2 South African's have automatically qualified by their performances at World's. There are 3, potentially 4 spots left for Southern Hemisphere athletes, but you have to compete at ASM in January to qualify. Top 3-4 there make it to the Arnold.

Colm (current NZSM) and I have both been training towards making the Arnold. He's a student, and I'm not exactly made of $.

We're both looking at about $1000 to get to the qualifier, and if we make the Arnold, a further $600 for flights to that as only Northern Hemisphere athletes get their airfares paid. I'm probably also in need of a decent deadlift suit, about $200.

Does anyone on this forum have any ideas for how to go about getting our broke selves to the qualifier? I'm available to do a limited number of programs and or training on Saturdays. A go-fund me account always seemed like a cop-out.

Some ideas bro...

- mad butcher sausage sizzles... lol semi srs.

- get some t shirts made cheap and sell...  the get strength guys did this a while back were cool nz powerlifting t shirts I bought one, money went to a good cause and I wore it lots. (out grown it now tho lol). wouldnt be hard to sell 100 t shirts with social media and your net work if u make $20 off each one that's $2000. Only problem is pre payment when ordering and size selection.

- workshops/seminars... These would be ok only problem is ppl don't want to pay and you don't want to waste your time... Too many know it alls and u get too many stupid questions and ppl who think they know better and misinterpret cause they morons Id get pissed off and knock some c*nt if I was taking it lol.

- approach some companies in fitness industry ask for help financially and you wear their shit 24/7 while your away. Plenty of companies with a lot of money. They always looking for a point of difference and advertising. I mean the comps a big deal? Not just some backyard Comp... It'll be on the net and stuff?

- talk to gpc and capo... Piggyback their next comps coming up to hold a raffle of some kind make the entry fee $10 more to support u and that $10 go in ur pocket and puts them in a raffle.

- put on a novice strongman Comp at dales gym... $50 to enter 15 ppl that's $750 20 people is $1000... Make it so it's done on a glossbrener or wilks thing so everyone has a chance or like a lb for lb type Comp so log is 60% bodyweight or something so all sizes can be competitive I dunno u the expert! Get companies to sponsor and donate protein and supps as prizes.

- my really good mate whose had bad luck with injuries was one of nz too judo players, his parents were mortgaging their house to send him round the world to comps to gain points in order to qualify for Olympics and I remember a few years back he held a fundraiser at my smart where he got a whole lot of ppl to chip in and not donate money but food, and stuff like signed rugby jerseys and mad butcher vouchers and shit like that... Then invited us all to go to this dinner... Think we paid $20ea and it was a buffet all donated food was probably 100 ppl there. So for $20 got a mean feed, Ewen Gilmore (rip) came along and gave an hour of his time talking and doing comedy so we got to enjoy that also which I thought was so cool and now that he gone I think it even cooler that he was there. Then they auctioned the stuff off.

you know that last 2 take a lot of organising but the biggest gains to make will take the most organising. Selling Cadbury chocolates dnt make u f*ck all Wookie  and u prob just eat them and owe Cadbury money. Unfortunately getting to wrong time of year.

when we catch up friday I will make some suggestions bro. I go away next Wednesday for work for 35 days otherwise I would dedicate my time to helping u raise some cash.

Muchos gracias, that's some decent ideas.

I'm also considering potentially doing a beard shave. Raise $200 I'll shave off the Wookie beard. Heck, make it a bit more and I'll get a buzz cut and shave my arms and legs.

You won't shave your head?

I'll look really weird and distracting, which isn't that good when you work as a pastor and have to preach Sundays.

Two ideas

- Hold a strongman fun day for kids and stuff, Kind of like elliot hulses open gym days. So like 15$ entry and kids do relays, stone throwing, log presses etc. Also you could hold seminars etc. Another idea would be take a loan and pay for your comp now since it's not too far away, but invest some money into wookie buisness and get your name out there to sponsores, full time coaching etc, and you could easily get back the money after you come back from comp.

- Hold a special mass in st. patricks cathedral or something. Praise and worship bands, gospels, eucharist, blessed sacrament, 1hr "the end is near so be ready" sermon, faith healings, reconciliation, free food, and best of all... A 5$ ENTRY FEE!! :) Like bro im not even joking, but ppl would be so keen to go to something like that (raised catholic so ikr). Pretty much just make something up on the fly, and add in some bs about having a near death experience. You will probs make 5000$ in one night *dirol*

Thats exactly why people would pay you to do it! haha

  • 3 weeks later...

Met Jono (Wookie) for some coaching assistance today, highly recommended if he's still offering the services. Very professional, inspires confidence pretty fast. Quickly picked up flaws in my form and got me lifting more than I have in a very long time in the big 3 compounds. Also he explained everything rather than leaving me out in the dark in the program (just random numbers from a spreadsheet to me before), how he thinks when approaching lifts etc. Would be great to see him go to Arnolds.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hi guys, apologies, I typed a long reply out and then internet died...

First things. End of January is now not happening for me. The contest is no longer a guaranteed entry into the Arnold. It appears the Arnold Pro is now going to be invite only. So now I can only really hope to make it in. After two contest wins in 2 weeks, I'd hope that I could get an invite along with the current NZSM.

As far as Seminars go, I'm open to doing a big 4 lift seminar (squat, bench, dead, overhead) as well as discussing programming. Finding a venue is the tricky option. If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

I will be making contact with Miada about having a Strongman seminar (log, stones, farmers, tyre, yoke and possibly carries), possible date being early January for around 4 hours. With good interest I'd hope to do mens and womens seminars.

I have a set up at my home in East Auckland. FOTR swung by for a session and made some really solid gains in conjunction with a personalised 5 week block of training. If anyone else is interested, PM me.

Fingers crossed for you then, mate. But how could they NOT invite the Wookie?!
