Lifting and Diving

Many divers on this forum?

One of the biggest risks for scuba divers is Decompression Sickness (DCS or the bends, or bent). This is basically when the inert gas you breath from your scuba tank (most commonly nitrogen from air) does not have time to be off gassed via your lungs (i.e. breathed out normally) before it turns into gas bubbles in your blood/joints/tissues/brain and causes any number of very bad problems. The idea is that you want to minimise the risk of bubbles forming. It's well known that doing cardio immediately after diving is a bad idea. It greatly increases your risk of getting bent but what does lifting do, if anything?

There is plenty of information easily accessible around the risks of cardio exercising immediately before, during, and immediately after scuba diving, but it takes some effort to find anything around the risks of lifting and diving so I thought I would share this here. This is the closest I can find to a focus on lifting:

http://dandiver.com/medical/faq/Timing_exercise_and_diving

"In summary, physical fitness -- including both strength and aerobic capacity -- is important for divers both for physical safety and decompression safety. Regular exercise training is best scheduled to separate intense exercise and diving. Intense physical training should be 24 hours on either side of diving activity. Any exercise within 24 hours of diving should involve the lowest possible joint forces. "

So basically, don't hit the gym right after a dive, and even more to the point if you've just done a very long, deep dive in cold water (where you had a heap of deco time), you probably should even be very careful about lifting your heavy kit back on to the boat!

(Especially if you have PFO)

Hey,

I was just making shit up in that other thread :-)

I work in an office, and dive recreationally in all of my spare time and using all of my money. This is what I was doing this past weekend (although it's not a pic of me)
