Powerlifting - Starting Out

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Im Brydie and new to the forum :-)

Joined the gym just under 2 years ago to lose weight, however ended up catching the lifting bug!
Have been working on my form and strength training for the past 9 months and managing to lift some decent weights - am at the stage where I want to look at getting serious about powerlifting and entering a novice competition but not really sure where to start, or what I need to do.

Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated!

Skeletor - looks like there is a comp down in Masterton in the next couple of weeks?

AZIDE - current 1RM's are 60kg for benchpress, 100kg for squat and 120kg for deadlift.

Your 1RMs are pretty close to mine, except bench, my bench SUX!!  What's your height/weight?

Yep, the Masterton Champs are on Saturday 13th at Wai Weight gym, lifting starts at  10:00 a.m. or so...the last comp these guys ran was a fun day out, a great way to meet folk and see what the sport's all about.

Will post more details as they come out if you like.

Hi Bridie,

i think that date may have changed, since the Powerhouse is hosting the annual Bledisbro comp on Sat 22nd,  and the awesome Record Breakers the next day.

Novices used to be able to enter the Bledisbro - it was my first-ever comp. I'll check to see if that's still the case.

The Record Breaker will be awesome, it's a rare sanctioned comp where NZ records can be set - expect to see big numbers.

The Bledisbro/ Powerhouse Open is a great comp, fantastic atmosphere... definitely worth the trip.

There's also the Hawkes Bay Championships, October 18th at Hastings Fitness Centre, Hastings. See the Central Districts Powerlifting Association page on FB.

Entry is $50, which includes the competition t-shirt. Entries close October 3rd.

it's open to novices, you just need shorts, a short- sleeve t-shirt (must have some sleeve, not so tank-top or singlet), and long socks (knee-high) for deadlift. Novices don't need a one-piece lifting suit. Shoes can be gym shoes, not work boots tho.
