Given how close National and Labour are at present on the polticial spectrum, I cannot fathom why anyone would want to swap Cunliffe for Key. For all my issues with the Nats, at least they don't announce uncosted policies and make blunders on a weekly basis. And to be honest, I couldn't possibly feel confident having a Prime Minister who has the support of 30% of his caucus as Cunliffe does.

Rumour is Labour's caucus are running the numbers on potentially getting Shearer back in as a caretaker leader till the election, to lessen the damage. With the Labour list having been released this week, everyone will be working out who misses out if Labour continue down into the 20%'s. And then the knives come out.

Really?! Man, there'd be some red faces over that one! (An appropriate colour for Labour, though...)

Still, I heard Mikey Havoc talking to Shearer on Hauraki a week or so back. He sounded so much more relaxed and confident - ironically more leader-like now than he did when he was leader.

That's true. It does seem unfair. But...

- I think you do need some threshold. Otherwise we'd end up with all the tiny "joke" parties in there too. Remember the McGillicuddy Serious Party? I don't know if they're still around, but you wouldn't want them in parliament once the amusement factor has worn off.

- Besides, if a party gets into parliament via an electorate MP, he only brings in as many MPs as is proportionate to their party vote. So if the party only gets 0.6%, it may not get any extra MPs at all. (At least, that's my understanding of the system.)

The bit of MMP that annoys me is the list. IMO, parties should not get to select the order of MPs on list. It means the ones at the top can simply rest on their laurels. Instead, the list order should be determined by each MP's electorate vote. That also means that if an electorate really doesn't want an MP in parliament, they do actually stand a chance of voting him/her out.
