Gymnation 2.0 - coming soon

Hey guys, we've been a bit quiet here recently, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to let you know what I've been up to.

Soon we'll be moving the forum onto a new software platform. It's pretty cool, and it comes with a lot of the bells and whistles that you guys have asked for at various times. (It's what we were aiming for with the current site, but missed.)

Off the top of my head, features include:

- Better mobile functionality

- Notifications when people reply to you, like your posts, etc

- Simplified structure for Workout Journals and Post your Pics

- Simplified design for Training Forums section on the front page

- Better social integration (some of that to come after the initial rollout)

- Feature articles (again, some to come later on)

- and much more.

The design is "the same, but different". We've spruced it up a bit, and made it a bit more modern.

Once Gymnation 2.0 is up and running, I want to start running far more promos and competitions. (In fact I'd like to start that right now, but I don't have enough time to do everything.)

So don't feel like nothing is happening here. There's a LOT happening behind the scenes. And soon it's going live. :)

How soon are we talking Pseudo?

My target was the end of the month. That may not be possible since the developer I was planning to use is booked up till then. This also involves coordinating a designer to create our look and feel, and another company to handle the migration of data - so there's a number of potential areas for delay. But to answer your question... we'll go live just as soon as possible. That's as precise as I can be, sorry!

Thanks for the positive comments, guys. I'll be honest - a niggling little voice in my head was questioning how long I should keep throwing money at this. I'm not ready to give up just yet though, so seeing that people still care is very cool indeed. It shows me I've made the right decision.

The last time a new nzbb/gymnation merger happened, half the population got wiped, is it time I farewell my fellow Americans?

I hope not. The whole point of this is to try and get those people back. This time it's not a major shift in brand though. Who we are will remain the same, even though the platform we run on will change.

So aside from one off costs like upgrades etc or even overall, do you lose money on this website pseudonym? And if so how much are we talking roughly?

That's a hard one to answer. You can't exclude the cost of upgrades or adding new features, because that's part of running the site, and that's where the bulk of the money is spent. Ongoing costs, like hosting, are minimal by comparison. I don't really want to go into the specifics publicly, but the move to Gymnation was expensive. My day job is still paying it off, with a little bit of help from Gymnation revenue. I'd guess it will probably take another year to fully break even.

So yeah... I'm quite keen to see the site do well. :P

- Simplified structure for Workout Journals and Post your Pics

The single reason I stopped logging here. Failed to learn the new structure due to laziness on my part but if you cleaned this up I would be glad to log.*preved*

That's good to know. And really, you shouldn't have to "learn the new structure" - if you do, it's too complicated.

So here's the plan:

There will one Workout Journals forum, where all the journals get posted. Within that, there will be a Post Your Progress subforum for those who want to post pics/vids without actually keeping a journal. For topics within these forums, you'll be able to set tags, categorising your journal/pics/vids as Bodybuilding, Powerlifting, Crossfit, etc. This means that people training across multiple disciplines (eg "powerbuilders") can select multiple tags for their topic. And people who only want to see Powerlifting journals can filter to only show topics with that tag.
