Auckland gyms

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

Cool community you have here. I am moving to Auckland in June for a few years from Australia, and I was looking to find any info on gyms there. I have been lifting for a decade and am after a no-nonsense gym- squat racks, deadlift stations, plenty of free weights. Somewhere there is a great energy for pushing past barriers. Any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated.

Wolfs in Wairau has awesome equipment & 24/7 access. Perfect for bodybuilding but also has some Crossfit / Oly stuff.

Les Mills Takapuna has reasonable equipment but a great atmosphere. More shiny than hardcore but plenty of hard trainers & lots of pretty girls *mosking* Can get too busy at peak times tho but hours 5.30-9pm weekdays 6-7 weekends.

Club Physical Albany has lots of good older equipment, less showy than Les Mills, less atmosphere, reduced hours and similar cost.  Still a good gym tho with a handful of decent trainers.

Human Performance Centre on Diana Drive - more sports specific / strength & conditioning gym. Platform, racks, chalk with limited machines but lots of strength stuff (bands/chains/sleds/strongman equipment etc). Good hours there but cant remember the details.

Lots of 24/7 chain gyms up here too but they're just clones of all the others, cheap in price, cheap machines though some have reasonable free weights.

Hi Nate225 good post but just like to add atmosphere is what you make it.

There are a lot of good people training at Club Physical in Albany and for those willing to be a part of the body building world in the gym it is the most amazing supportive atmosphere you can get.

Maybe I am just bias as I train there but I have trained in enough gyms to knoe that CP Albany has all the equipment you need to build a great physique and have a lot of fun with others of a like mind.

Club physical Albany is a shit hole compared to westgate. Les mills and wolfs on the shore are well ahead of cp Albany.

Not overly useful if in taka mate, plenty of gyms there, no need to go to the city or down to devo.

Just goes to show how much of a difference good people make then at Club Physical Albany.

And as l said all the equipment necessary is there, may mot be bright shiny and new but it is functional.

Equipment not bad, atmosphere so, so.

I can throw a stone at my apartment from CP Albany & I did my entire 2013 comp prep cardio and a dozen or so workouts there so I guess its a semi qualified comment rather than a guess based on one casual train or something. Definately some good people there with Naera, Aylmer etc, but atmosphere not on a par with LM.

Given pricing though and that the OP's working in Taka I'd go LM's for sure, though if he's a serious bodybuilder Wolfs is worth the extra 5 minutes drive.

Thanks for the info everyone, much appreciated. I did train for comps when I was late teens, and have lifted pretty seriously ever since. Am thinking about making the stage around 2016. The current gym I go to in Australia is mainly used by serious powerlifters and bodybuilders, and it is always great for motivation when there are people pushing the limits every session.

I will check out a few of the options when I come over mid- June and do a few sessions at each, but at the moment Les Mills or Wolfs sound like good options. Thanks again.
