Fitness Expo Strongman Comp

Anyone here gonna give the comp a go? Worth noting there is a lightweight class (U105kg) as well as the open class.

I know Jono MacFarlane & myself will be there, as I believe one other Gymnation regular will be injuries pending.

In the opens I'm expecting Colm Woulfe, Nick Hansen, Matt Ragg, Sam Magele, Ethan Foote, to be competing. Not confirmed but possibly also the likes of Reuben De Jong, Rongo Keene, Sean Poole, Rudolph Sadaraka, Afa Paea.

In the lightweights Todd Foster, Alex Orwin,  Chris Latham and not too sure who else?

Theres a few bodybuilders in off season mode so who knows we might see some more opens like former NZSM / Mr Wellington Bodybuilder Darren Farrow, 800+ Powerlifting Bodybuilder Hamish Coulter, and sub 6% Powerlifter / Bodybuilder / Coach Geordie Shields. We may even see one of his newly lightweight prodiges like Greg Turrell, who's an accomplished Powerlifter prior to his stint into Bodybuilding.

a lightweight class (U105kg)

Lightweight at a mere 104kg - puny little pipsqueaks, really! Biggrin

Has Hamish done any strongman stuff before? I reckon he'd have the ideal physique for it, wouldn't he?

Well technically you can weigh in at 105.0 I believe? The best I managed was 104.9 LOL :-D

Not sure if Hamish has done anything Strongman specific but definately hasn't got into the comp circuit....yet!

His physique probably suits PLing better (Squat n Bench with them T-Rex limbs!) but if he was in comp shape he'd be an insane U105!

I'm sure he'd be competitive in the NZ Opens but when you get to top level you tend to need height as well - most WSM / Giants Live competitors are 6'2" minimum, up to 6'10"ish Brian Shaw. Helps lifting big objects to have longer limbs, and to lift things to the higher platforms, or even the big hands gripping large diameter bars/dumbells. That said Hamish with his fat little hands smoked the polished steel Inch dumbell - a very hard thing to do!! :-D

A bit of peer pressure might see Quadzilla break out the Stars & Stripes tights and hit the Strongman arena?!

The FItx is a bit of a different show, it suits guys a bit better that aren't as mobile or athletic.

There are no 50metre sprints with farmers walks, or a max carry with a 160kg anvil that really smokes the cardio side of things. This show favours static strength a bit more.

I'm likely to do it. Initially it was going to be a one day show, now it's turned into a 2 day event with a partial deadlift and a powerlifting style deadlift in it. I haven't done a heavy partial in a long time and it ususually takes me a while to lift heavy on that kind of thing, but it should still be a good hit out.

WIth Nate doing it it will be just like old times. ;)

Btw, the deadlift is now first event on day 2, with the stones the last event.

Dead, Herc Hold, Log for reps, Stones.

Stones are a great finisher.

Amended - good call too, Stones is always the penultimate Strongman event in my opinion!

You gonna be under 105 Nate or over?

I'd say under bro? I could probably get up to 110 or so before the comp but I doubt it'd make much difference to my overall placing, though it would help in the overhead (the log really throws you around when you start moving weights greater than you weigh as you well know!). For me it'd probably be detrimental in the full deadlift tho so swings n roundabouts.

In reality I'm not gonna be in any position with 10 weeks training to challenge yourself & Colm for the overall but the U105 title is conceivable (in theory lol).

Sure thing, go under then.

I don't expect to be in shape to win, but I'm hopefully going to hold my own.

Yeah I think we got time to get technically decent still (hence I'm into 2 implement sessions a week atm) but base strength probably not there yet.

You always seem to go pretty well on the day - with that 170 overhead the other day I can see at least one attempt at a record! :)

Any of the so-called strong guys in the gyms going to front up this year?

Pretty sure I can answer this one in advance!

Erry body wanna pretend they're strong in the safety of their little 24/7 franchised gym lol....

And mate none of those Facebook fitness gurus come on this website you better to post that on Facebook as a status and then have the revolutionists led by the Maori zyzz swift turn against you and tell you to stop hating or whatever the new word for real talk is.

I would love to enter but my torn forearm tendons are unlikely to hold out for the duration of the event and with a baby girl due in a few weeks I would rather hold her than be in a cast (My missus words lol)

Will definately be there to cheer the boys on.  I trained Strongman for a few months when I lived in Perth with Daniel Macri and absolutely loved it.  Def keen to give it a good go once I can.  The strength stuff like log press and farmers walk was no problem for me but lack of height definately came into affect when we started playing with the stones.  Strongman really is a great equalizer, every event is different.

Will be great to see Nate and Wookie give it a good go.  Particularly interested to see if Reuben De Jong can pull out a decent result given all the shit hes had to go through!
