Reducing Cholesterol

Hi again,

I have been given the news by my Doc that my cholesterol is a little too high. Not crazy high, but I'm in my mid 30's and have a history of heart disease in my family so I'm taking the news seriously.

The Doc's advice was simply to cut back on dairy and eggs. Well, apart from Protien powder I don't actually eat much dairy and eggs, so I was hoping that you could have a quick read of exactly what I have been eating for the last couple weeks and tell me if there is any obvious 'big contributors' to Cholesterol?

This is a report from MyFitnessPal of my food diary for the last couple weeks. Ignore the fact that the report has a Cholesterol coloum because almost every thing I enter does not have the cholesterol info, if it did, I wouldn't need to ask you guys for help!! I'm trying to eat between 2000 and 2500 calories a day.

Is WPC my biggest issue for Cholesterol?

I'm worried that it is. ...

I've never heard of a link between WPC and cholesterol. There may be one, but it would surprise me greatly. Why are you worried about this? Because it's dairy?

As for cholesterol and eggs, that's one of those hotly debated issues. There are many who believe that eggs have no negative impact on cholesterol at all - and them believe it very strongly. Conversely, conventional medicine says to avoid them. Unfortunately I don't know enough to have an informed opinion either way - although I do eat plenty of eggs, seemingly with no adverse effects. But if you're not eating many eggs, this doesn't matter anyway.

To be honest, overall your diet now looks pretty good to me. However, knowing the background here, I suspect the biggest culprit is simply that you haven't been training for the last 6+ months and (I'm guessing) probably eating far more delicious Mexican fast food than you should have. I suggest eating clean and training hard - really hard - for the next couple of months, then get your cholesterol checked again. I reckon that'll do the trick.

All good points. Eating out almost every meal for 6 weeks before coming home probably didn't help.

The focus on WPC is based on 1) it's dairy and 2) the nutritional info on the packaging tells you the cholesterol amount and by my rough calc it equates to about 10% of your daily allowance for each serving. That's not to be sneezed at.

Lets see see how I go in six months with my next set of blood tests. Just need to work out how best to manage my other half and her 'opinion' on what I should and should not be eating in the mean time!!
